Finding Your Roots

is one of the best TV shows ever, IMHO. It punctures so many myths that support racism.
Most everyone is a mixture.
African-Americans who are descendants of slaves, have deeper roots in America than most whites.
You learn about successful communities, farms and businesses established by freed slaves - a source of pride that seems to have been erased.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is conducting an amazing lesson for America. I wish everyone would tune in.

Lots of really interesting 'American' stories emerge -- about the real America, not the 'good old days'.

Even when I'm not that interested in the person - or know who they are sometimes - it still ends up being fascinating. Their researchers do a great job, especially when it comes to African-American genealogy, where finding records is extremely difficult. I'm always struck when the subjects become emotional (Dustin Hoffman was memorable in that regard) over long ago ancestors they didn't even know about.

What is so great about Gates is that he is at the top of his field in academia but he also is able to relate on such a personal level with the people he has on. As the OP said, the show is a great teaching moment for America.
