(16,917 posts)rushed there to see a sunset. It was truly like a religious experience - hushed quiet by the people around me - haunting beauty before me. I must go there again!
Thanks for that fantastic video!

(52,116 posts)the air in the grand canyon can cool quickly at night while the temperature above, near surface level, remains hotter.
a cloud can form in the canyon in the cooler air but can't escape, so instead you see a cloud filling the canyon with just the surface rolling like waves on an ocean.
sdfernando
(4,925 posts)and with the time-lapse the clouds (or fog if you will) moves amazingly like ocean waves. Fluid dynamics are so cool!

(377 posts)It was December. From inside the canyon at Indian Gardens it looked like a cloudy day, no fog, good visibility of the canyon below us. We thought a storm system was moving in a day early.

(4,157 posts)If they knew how deep the canyon is, what would they have feared had happened?
If they had just stumbled on this occurrence, would someone have dared to walk down into the cloud? If not, imagine their surprise the next day.

(49,945 posts)Perched on the edge of Grand Canyon, a surprising stone tower celebrates ancient mysteries of the Southwest. The Desert View Watchtower is a monument to a time, a place and a people. Discover what inspired architect Mary Colter to build the Watchtower in 1932.

(9,637 posts)I have been to the Grand Canyon once, and I always thought it would look just like it did in all of the pictures I have seen of it.
No photograph could ever do it justice, but this video came as close to being there as one could imagine.
This should be required viewing for every citizen of the planet. If this doesn't convince you that we need to save Earth, because it is a miracle in itself, nothing will.

(10,823 posts)One of the few places the word 'awesome' applies. My husband and went back last March, a very generous Christmas gift from our kids. It was as spectacular as I recalled from our first visit. Plus we had more time to explore. It's not a stretch to say that you feel something overwhelmingly sacred while standing on the Canyon's rim. Even my son who hiked the rim-to-rim-to-rim trail and has hiked all over the world was duly impressed.
It's why drilling and mining can never be allowed here. It is sacred ground and should be preserved for future generations.

(969 posts)Photographs simply do not ... can not ... convey the sense of scale involved. You stand on the Rim, look out, and see wonders everywhere. From the Wapiti (elk) peacefully grazing a few yards from you, to the tiny sliver of silver that is the Colorado River, a mile below, to the far wall that is the reason for the word Technicolor.
Grandeur. You never really understand the meaning of the word until you stand there, and just Look around you. It is a profoundly spiritual experience, unique on this world, and must be treasured and preserved for others. You just know that at a level in your psyche that is simultaneously deeper than primal and loftier than intellectual.
It is one of The Seven Wonders of the World. Undisputedly.
Come and visit. To Feel. But take only pictures, and leave only footprints, and as few of those as possible. Find a quiet place, sit down, and LOOK. It will change you forever.
We hold these Wonders in trust for our descendants. That is a truly sacred charge.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,360 posts)I've been an OTR trucker all my adult life and have been to all of the lower 48, 3 Canadian Provinces, 2 Hawaiian Islands, Australia, England and Europe. I've seen the Acropolis, Venice, The Colosseum in Rome, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, The Swiss Alps, much of Germany, been to Stockholm, London, Sydney and Papeete'. I've seen Ayers Rock and the Olgas, a grove of Ghost Gums off the Plenty River in the NT when the next nearest person was 100 miles away.
I have driven all but about 1000 miles of the 48,000 mile Interstate system and across I 40 through Flagstaff several dozen times over the years. I have been up and down US 89 from Page to Flagstaff and up through Monument valley, the 4 corners, up through Moab, across Utah 128 which follows the Colorado through an impressive canyon in it's own right. I've boated on Lake Powell twice, both at full pool (1997) and when it was down about 50' (The following year). I have covered much of those western states. I've seen the General Sherman Sequoia and Rainbow Bridge Natural Arch. I've driven across the Golden Gate and the Verrazano Narrows bridges. I've been to Key West and Seattle, San Diego and Portland, ME.
But I've never been to the Grand Canyon.
I clearly need to remedy that.

(3,064 posts)I can't put into words how wondrous the Canyon is.
And you can't prepare yourself for the majesty of it.
The Kaibab Plateau surrounding it is beautiful but doesn't prepare you for the grandeur. If you're on the South Rim you'll see the final 1,200 to 1,500 feet of the North Rim and on the North Rim you'll see Humphreys Peak, highest in Arizona, and marvel at the flatness of the surrounding plateau.
But with just one step you're staring into the Canyon itself. It's there in all its majesty. You can't take it all in.
There's really nothing like it.
