🌍 Europe now has a Green New Deal and it's coming to a ballot box near you in May

Lorenzo Marsili
Sun 01, 2019

Excerpt:

On Friday January 25 the Council of European Spring officially approved the Green New Deal for Europe: our groundbreaking, pan-European programme for change.

From a green investment programme to drive through the world’s ecological transition to clear action on ending the scandal of tax havens; from humane and effective migration policy to a clear plan to tackle poverty in our continent; from a Workers’ Compact to a European Convention on Women’s Rights and much more, the Green New Deal is the go-to document for anyone wishing to break the dogma of “There Is No Alternative” and bring back hope to our continent.

After decades where politics became little more than technical administration and business as usual, the time has come to reclaim the visionary potential of ideas and of people power.

“All historical experience confirms this – man would not have attained the possible unless time and again he had reached out for the impossible.” So said Max Weber in a famous address to German students in 1919.

DiEM25 co-founder, Yanis Varoufakis, describes how our Green New Deal for Europe will tackle involuntary under-employment and involuntary migration. Check it out at europeanspring.net. It's coming to a ballot box near you in May 2019!

...out dangerous fossil fuels.

What passes as “green” in the popular imagination is as realistic as the popular notion in Europe some time back that the best means of dealing with the bubonic plague was prayer.

seem to have hope. The chances of accomplishing all of their goals are what is debatable. Hope is good if it works toward change. With rising sea levels the dedication to alternative energy will rise, as well. Don't piss on hope.

I frankly have no patience whatsoever for glib statements.

It is not debatable at all.

We are at 411 ppm as of this week at the Mauna Loa observatory. I've been hearing all kinds of crap about going off dangerous fossil fuels for my whole damned adult life, and I'm not young. They were all bullshit, all of them completely devoid of any kind of deep study.

Oblivious statements, lacking any basis in data are a big part of the problem. When I was a kid, I used to make these kinds of statements myself, and I'm deeply ashamed of having contributed to the nonsense that has caused us to steal from all future generations by rote commentary that has no basis in fact.

My journal at this site, contains commentary on only a tiny fraction of the scientific papers I've read on energy and the environment.

I would submit that I know far more about energy than any one who believes that Europe is going to do anything realistic or meaningful about climate change.

They haven't, they aren't and they won't.

Prayer and slogans won't help. Knowledge might, but obtaining knowledge takes a tremendous amount of work, and in my experience, most people offering slogans are are far too lazy to do it, from Amory Lovins on down.
