Germans trust China more than the US, survey finds

Germans have an increasingly negative view of the relationship between their country and the US, a survey released on Friday indicated, with many seeing China as a more reliable partner.

Just over 42 percent of Germans who took part in the study said they saw China as a more reliable partner than the US, compared with 23.1 percent who favored the US over China.

Some 85 percent of Germans have a negative or very negative opinion of current US-German relations, with only just over 10 percent viewing them in a positive light.

A clear majority (57.6 percent) said they were in favor of putting more distance between the two trans-Atlantic allies. Only 13.1 percent said they would prefer to see the nations work more closely at present.

Word any survey right, and you'll find that four out of five dentists recommend sugared gum.

I live in Germany, speak the language fluently, travel all over for work, and am married to a German with one grown bi-cultural (and dual national) daughter living here, too. Her sister, with the same ethnic and cultural background, chooses to live in New York City. Different strokes for different folks. Despite the distance, they are very close. For that matter, the proximity of the New York and Frankfurt airports make them feel that there really isn't a lot of distance between them.

Germans, in general, do NOT trust China. Period. They know what the system is there, how dissent is handled, and what working conditions are for non-white collar people. They know the pollution levels of Chinese cities. As much as they despise Trump and the disgusting policies (both stated and implied) of our Republican Party, they trust us as people far more than the Chinese. Germans like Chinese restaurants, but hardly any want to live there, or visit frequently. Despite Trumppence, they feel very differenty about us.

Yes, Germans know Trump is an abomination. Yes they hear what destruction he is wreaking upon our courts and environmental regulations. Yes, they know awful it would be if Pence replaced him. Some of them even know what filth McConnell is, and why he has been the worst villain of all in some respects. But they also know we elected Barack Obama less than eleven years ago, and thougt the world of us for it. They are vulnerable to Russian manipulation (look at what Merkel's predecessor Chancellor did upon leaving office, for example), and know they re not alone in that.

But they also know that no other nation produced a president that has made its population (and those of its allies) so proud as we were of Obama. They certainly know that no one like Obama has a ghost of a chance in China of being more than one more nameless jailed dissident.

Surveys can be manipulated to "reveal" almost anything the survey holder wants them to, depending on how they are worded, and whom they survey. If you want the real story, come here, learn the language, find out for yourself.

Otherwise, as André Gide said (and my posts always have at the bottom), "Believe those who seek the truth. Doubt those who find it."
