HOOD HOLDING ON TO NARROW LEAD OVER REEVES IMPACT OF INDEPENDENT WALLER RUN NOT YET CERTAIN
Democrat Jim Hood still holds a slim lead over Republican Tate Reeves in what currently appears to be the most likely gubernatorial general election match-up. Statewide, 44% of voters currently support Hood, while 42% back Reeves and 14% are undecided.

Mississippi Today: Have you ever worn blackface?
Hood: No. I can tell you that for sure. It would smother me to death. When I go hunting, I cant even wear a mask. You know, when you go to Arkansas, those die-hard duck hunters will shoot you if you dont have a mask on. It would smother me to death, so I can absolutely tell you no.
Mississippi Today: What about a Klan hood and robe?
Hood: I dont remember going to anything where Ive dressed as anything like that. No. We did all kinds of stupid stuff in college. I admit that. The question, though, for us as Americans is, Whats somebodys record afterwards? What have you done? I made the DAs office look like Mississippi, I made the AGs office look like Mississippi.

Those answers are aren't exactly reassuring.

(16,844 posts)4. I think Jim Hood is the only Democrat left in a statewide office.
He has a reputation as a moderate, so he can pull this off. Tate Reeves just isn't all that likable. Hood is a good politician, and I think he can peel off enough votes from whites to add to the black vote and win. He's the Democrats' best hope to win the governor's office in about 30 years.

(82,849 posts)6. Mississippi has a quaint old law from Jim Crow days
Just because a candidate wins the most votes, he doesn't automatically win office. He also has to win the majority of the 122 state House districts. If the candidate with the most votes fails to win a majority of the 122 House districts, the Mississippi House of Representatives, heavily Republican, chooses the winner from the top two finishers.
Isn't that nice?
