We don't have a dog for two reasons...

1. We travel a lot. So finding a sitter is going to be hard and expensive.

2. We have two cats, the Alpha Cat hates dogs, he's attacked both of my sister's dogs. Our neighbor's dogs are afraid of him...they will not come in the house when they visit.

3. When we play with neighbors, relatives, friends, etc. dogs....the Alpha Cat gives us the cold shoulder.

Aside from that, we love dogs and would like to have one...but one member of our family has a hard veto on that.

I'm sure he likes it because he associates it with wealth and success, and he wants people to think he is wealthy and successful, so he wants to be seen with it to create that association... but does he have any internal experience (independent of what other people might think) when he sees gold crap? Does it move him in such a way that he would be similarly affected even if it were worthless to others, but aesthetically identical? I suspect not. He is an empty, empty person. Everything is a performance to get external validation.

The fewer living things put in a position to serve his need for external validation the better.

Well it was not him just the guy who had all of the equipment. dogs still do a better job and you can support 6 for an entire lifetime ( including EVERYTHING ) for the same amount of one of those machines. I did the math once comparing the dogs to the machines they have at the airports and these border machines are more than likely not very different in price. Yes, I am sure they are somewhat more expensive but then since I did that math long ago prices to maintain those dogs for life have gone up.

I am new here to DU but a long-time reader since I discovered you after my wailing and gnashing of teeth the day after Trump was elected.

As for his not liking dogs, I am not one bit surprised. Sadly, my deceased stepfather was exactly like Trump, albeit without the money. He was extremely sadistic and cruel, not only to us four children but also to every pet we ever had. I have seen him hit dogs in the head with a hammer, kick them across the room, and punch them in the face with his fist--among other things. I would hate to think of a man like Trump owning a pet because it would be mistreated.

Trump's saying that having a dog in the White House seems phony to him is laughable (as are most of the things he says). Is there a bigger phony in the world than he?

I'm sure dogs wouldn't like him, either.
