2nd Fairfax accuser says she was raped by former Duke basketball player Corey Maggette

By Amir Vera, CNN

Updated 8:08 AM ET, Tue February 12, 2019

CNN)Meredith Watson, who has accused Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of rape, says she also was raped by former Duke University basketball player Corey Maggette, according to her attorney.

The New York Times first reported Maggette was the Duke basketball player who Watson's attorney accuses of raping Watson during her sophomore year at Duke.
Maggette, who went on to play 14 seasons in the NBA and is now a freelance basketball analyst on Fox Sports West, denied the allegation in a statement to the Times.

"It has only been through media accounts and a statement from Meredith Watson's lawyer that I first learned or heard of anything about the sexual assault allegation," Maggette said, according to the Times. "I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my life and I completely and categorically deny any such charge."

CNN has been unable to reach Maggette independently for comment.

When contacted by CNN, Fox Sports West said it takes allegations of misconduct seriously.

...investigate all of it. Try to figure out what’s true. Take it seriously.

any physical evidence is long gone. Memories also fade. All you left with is what you have now, she says one thing, he says another. Presumably even if she told other people, such statements wouldn't be admissible in court as hearsay.
So when people say "investigate it all" what exactly do you think investigation can come up with that many years later?
And who is supposed to investigate?
If accuser hasn't filed a police report, police won't be investigating.

...and the only rational way forward here is to do whatever investigating you can. Even so many years later. Otherwise there isn’t any point in these things coming up.

Hopefully things are getting to a point where sexual assault victims can be more comfortably coming forward immediately when these things happen. It’s really the best way to get whatever justice you can.

...and we can’t expect negative consequences for someone based on accusations that can’t be substantiated. The only way to get something close to a just outcome for all involved is to do whatever sort of investigation can be done at this point.

Any investigation into these very old claims is going to be naturally inconclusive.

To me, saying "investigate" is basically a way of saying "make this go away."

There are three people in this situation: Accuser 1, Accuser 2, and the Lt. Gov. All three deserve a fair treatment.

An accusation can't be treated as true based solely on its existence. If that's the standard we go with, we've completely thrown out any sort of concern for the truth. If we don't allow use of all resources to either verify, discredit, or declare the accusations inconclusive then justice isn't being done to anyone.

As to your question: what if they're inconclusive? Then everyone moves on and use this as yet another point in an effort to encourage victims to be more forthcoming when sexual assault happens. It's wrong to just take accusers at their word just as it's wrong to take the accused at their word. Ultimately none of us here know either party well enough to really judge credibility on our own.

That doesn't seem like what we should be doing here.
