Really? I wish someone on MSNBC would actually analyze AOC's platform and draw a line where they feel it's too extreme. That would be more helpful than judging her based on her age, enthusiasm and political labels.

(7,410 posts)the issues for which she advocates have majority support. But media outlets are BRANDING her as extreme. She's really not. The same thing occurred with Bernie Sanders over the past few years. His main issues were within the mainstream of political preferences as expressed by voters. But even mainstream media sources branded Sanders as extreme (socialist!) without paying attention to the details. IMO, the media is very good at controlling the narrative and branding (news is now "entertainment" ), but is sorely deficient at an analysis of issues promoted by those who are branded as extreme.

(7,142 posts)the right wing M$M is not about entertainment, profits are secondary. The right wing M$M is complicit and yes that includes msnbc. Donahue, Olbermann, Uygur, Brashear, Harris/Perry, Schultz, Ratigan were all fired from msnbc, not because of poor ratings but because those people strayed from the right wing narratives.
I go way back to when Tweety and Donahue were arguing over invading Iraq. Tweety was for it, Donahue was against it, msnbc fired Donahue.
I do watch Nicole Wallace, and Rachel, they stray from the narratives from time to time, but msnbc is not liberal, it merely puts a liberal slant to the right wing narratives.
If cable news were truly fair and balanced, Trump would be impeached by now. Instead we arguing over whether Democrats are going too far in investigating the criminal, traitorous Trump crime family.

AOC carry on.
I have read the other posts here, ok she's not perfect neither are we, but she will learn by her mistakes.

(46,576 posts)I would rather this short-term learning curve than what Clarence Thomas did for years, silencing his own voice in order to deflect criticism.
I don't expect all Democrats to love her platform and I'm not sure I am behind her 100%. But I think her fresh new voice deserves to be heard, and that won't happen if the media tries to brand her without looking closely at what she brings to the table.

(7,142 posts)she has the ability to change the right wing narratives, a rare talent. They would love to Franken her.
We need to have her back. She is not perfect but none of our Democratic politicians are.
You go girl.

(68,355 posts)additional jobs which would be created is a good thing. She is so talented but I fear the tweet she sent claiming Amazon's withdrawal as a victory will hurt her politically with those who will re-elect her or not in 20. I just don't know what to think about this.

(7,142 posts)because AOC was against the deal? Why does she get slammed? The offers, the tax breaks were still on the table for Bezos. I wish I had her for my rep instead of Glenn Thompson.

(91,966 posts)Amazon with open arms, and they didn't want to hassle with the politics of New York, so it was simply the path of least resistance.
To your question why does Representative Ocasio-Cortez "get slammed", it goes both ways. She is admired by some, and not by others. It appears that she has a tendency to create publicity for herself, either intentionally or otherwise, and that in itself will be a lightening rod for controversy among various groups

(12,264 posts)Like I said the ads write themselves. I don't think her district is totally in favor of her position. She is doing things thinking nationally not locally and she won't get reelected doing that.

(14,254 posts)She's a loud mouth newbie. Good ideas, but she doesn't know how to handle the media. Social media, yes, media, no.
I like her spirit, but she needs to learn how to be serious and not just toss grenades.
Sorry to her fans.

(91,966 posts)simply did not want to deal with that when there were places that were welcoming them with open arms.
Negotiating in public usually does not provide a productive outcome.
getagrip_already
(14,254 posts)On the one hand, amazon isn't either pulling out of new york/lic or not putting 25k jobs into it. Amazon was building a new "hq" building. A large number of the people who would work there are likely already working in the ny area, just in smaller office locations. They surely would have consolidated existing employees.
Companies always do that.
Also, they will still add new employees to the nyc area, it will just cost them more to house them. They can't not be an employer in nyc. The city is the epicenter of finance, marketing, commerce, and yes, tech.
So new york didn't lose 25k new jobs, despite how it was positioned.
But at the same time, it wouldn't have had he impact on housing people were concerned about because a lot of those who would work there wouldn't live there.
So I think both sides blew it here. We lost the media war over stupid comments. I've seen multiple news casters say it was a terrible week for dems. Huh? What?
It wasn't a battle we needed. It didn't save any neighborhoods or keep housing affordable. It didn't cost the region 25k jobs.
Everybody lost on this one. Inexperience matters.

(68,355 posts)It has given us a number of good paying jobs (for our area) and lead to other jobs being created because of the Amazon jobs. There is no doubt, it has been a positive thing. And this was a headquarters...even better in my opinion. I tweeted Bezos today reminding him of our warehouse and suggesting that a headquarters in Cleveland which has a great deal to offer would be worth considering. Hell, I want those jobs if we can get them.
theophilus
(3,750 posts)to bolt on the deal. What they are afraid of a few voices that speak against their business model? Poor Jeff.
The people of Long Island City victims? I heard that 700 jobs were promised the first year. What sort of jobs? Has Amazon hurt any types of jobs? Do they pay a living wage for the area? Do they provide good healthcare benefits? Can't they come in a provide jobs if they are interested in the area? Can anyone else do better than Amazon was going to do? Shall we just vote to give BeZos ALL the money? What a crock. IMHO
Demsrule86
(68,355 posts)and AOC had refused to meet with Bezos. And that they were doing some permit that would have required a six month wait...don't know if this is accurate...Just what my friend told me. The governor and the mayor also should shoulder blame...this was a good deal. They should have been working it too...I don't know. I like all the Democrats involved. I just think this worked out very badly for everyone.

(13,615 posts)many new yorkers did not want Amazon, because they saw how it drove people out of Seattle with sky high rent increases. It makes no sense to bring jobs to your town if you cannot afford to live near them.

(27,762 posts)Rents are insane, they knock down affordable housing to build luxury housing, there was a small one bedroom house for sale in my neighborhood (just a regular neighborhood), for $1.1 million, transit is stretched to the limit, the displaced people from housing that's been knocked down are flooding the streets, and local businesses are closing in droves.
And they're bringing these workers in - population is increasing at an unsustainable level. They're not jobs for people who were already here.

but a lot of press. Shes made more than a few embarrassing gaffes that demonstrated her lack any in depth knowledge. Prior to yesterday, she was the only Democrat to vote (twice) not to end the shutdown providing a nonsensical reason as to why she so voted (and again demonstrating her lack of knowledge). Amazingly, she did all that during her first 3 weeks in office. And dont get me started on Just Us Democrats.
Her Green New Deal is a headline without substance that the Rep senate will use to embarrass the Dems.
We have any number of outstanding people, (Pelosi, Warren, Harris, Klobucher, Brown etc) who Id far prefer speak for me.
