Washington, D.C. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer released this joint statement on President Trump declaring a national emergency:
The Presidents unlawful declaration over a crisis that does not exist does great violence to our Constitution and makes America less safe, stealing from urgently needed defense funds for the security of our military and our nation. This is plainly a power grab by a disappointed President, who has gone outside the bounds of the law to try to get what he failed to achieve in the constitutional legislative process.
The Presidents actions clearly violate the Congresss exclusive power of the purse, which our Founders enshrined in the Constitution. The Congress will defend our constitutional authorities in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the public, using every remedy available.
This issue transcends partisan politics and goes to the core of the Founders conception for America, which commands Congress to limit an overreaching executive. The Presidents emergency declaration, if unchecked, would fundamentally alter the balance of powers, inconsistent with our Founders vision.
We call upon our Republican colleagues to join us to defend the Constitution. Just as both parties honored our oath to protect the American people by passing the conference committee bill, the Congress on a bipartisan basis must honor the Constitution by defending our system of checks and balances.
The President is not above the law. The Congress cannot let the President shred the Constitution.

Guys, they are NOT your colleagues and they do NOT give a shit about the constitution.
They must be shown to be who they truly are to all Americans, displayed as the fascist traitors they are, and then stamped out, drowned out like extinguishing a horrific forest fire, never to ignite again...

(1,220 posts)We had a humanities class in our high school way back in 1969 (the class began in 1968). Our humanities teachers always stressed that history has shown those appointed to The Supreme Court of The United States of America (whose numbers count far fewer than U.S. Presidents) could historically be counted on to rise above politics, considering their lifetime appointments and in consideration of the harsh light history will shine on them.
I don't recognize this country anymore. I don't know if those rules apply these days. But I hope my teachers were right.

(7,142 posts)force McConnell to bring it to the floor of the Senate. Let's see if Susan Collins and Marco Rubio back up their talk against this power grab.
By the way, a reporter needs to ask minority leader McCarthy if he's ok with Trump taking money earmarked for his district and putting it towards the wall.

(6,831 posts)Eisenhower ? Not a chance. The man was the embodiment of patriotism.
Kennedy ? No way. He had actually read the Constitution.
Johnson ? Hell no. It would ever have occurred to him.
Nixon ? No, even he wasn't this power-mad.
Ford ? Absolutely not.
Carter ? Unimagineable. He was an actual Christian.
Reagan ? Divert funds from the military ? Are you kidding ?
GHW Bush ? Fat chance.
Clinton ? No way.
GW Bush ? No. Not even Cheney would have gone this far.
Obama ? Please.
Everyone of these men understood the Constitution, the separation of powers and the limits placed on each branch and would never have attempted to set this kind of an precedent.
Impeachment ? Let the party begin.
