(CNN) The Democratic National Committee plans to meet with 2020 campaigns next week to hand out an "affirmation form" for candidates to sign and certify they will run and serve as members of the Democratic Party, a DNC official said Tuesday.
The announcement follows Bernie Sanders' entry into the 2020 campaign earlier Tuesday his second consecutive presidential election. An independent who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, Sanders rankled some Democrats in 2016 when he ran for the nomination even though he wasn't an official member of the party.
DNC members passed a new rule last August, which was seen as a response to the Sanders campaign, requiring all candidates "to affirm in writing" that they "are a member of the Democratic Party, will accept the Democratic nomination; will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party."
According to the DNC, all the campaigns who have announced have been invited to the meeting. Once they receive the form, they will have a week to return it to the DNC.

(31,261 posts)My guess if there is one person not showing his or her taxes, a lot of questions will come that person's way. If that person is Bernie, that is going to be chum into the water that draws media sharks to him to look at every aspect of his record and political life.

(30,717 posts)They can sign any fucking thing. If they break their word later, how can this be enforced?
This is worthless. Let the DNC look at past behavior when it comes to sharing the resources of the party with ANYONE who claims to be a Democrat. Trusting the wrong person could cost us the election.

(6,007 posts)He caucuses with them, he votes with them, his policies are progressive. They are just trying to create trouble like they did last time and it didn't work out so well. What is the obsession with the name? Just like Trump and his "team" players.
Reminds me of many of those who call themselves "Christian" when they don't really try to follow the teachings Christ taught. And even Christ noted that some people who preach in his name, etc. aren't going to get into heaven because they didn't DO what He taught.
Same thing here. If someone is doing the right things, that is what is important. And just as Christ said, whose name you invoke it not. That is a lesson and I wish people would learn it. The real values are those in your heart and not in your team jersey.
Live and learn.

I trust the DNC.. they helped get us our BLUE WAVE in November.. so we now have a Fighting Chance to hold back the Fascism.. with Nancy Pelosi at the helm.
And, NO.. it's NOT like Fucking trump.

(144,919 posts)This is the actual rule that governs whether sanders can run as a member of the Democratic party https://www.thegreenpapers.com/P20/2019-01-03-2020_Call_for_the_Convention_12.21.18_w-attachments.pdf
A. are a member of the Democratic Party;
B. will accept the Democratic nomination; and
C. will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party.
This requirement of written affirmation shall not supplant any necessary qualifications a candidate must satisfy at the state level, but is in addition to such affirmations required by individual states and territories. The written affirmation shall be done via an approved format by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee appended to this Call
There is an oath that sanders and other candidates will have to take

Pursuant to Article IV of the Call for the 2020 Democratic National Convention, I hereby affirm that, upon publicly announcing my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in the 2020 election, I am a member of the Democratic Party. I will run as a Democrat, accept the nomination of my Party, and I will serve as a Democrat if elected. I understand that signing this form does not supplant any legal or Party requirement by any state or territory to qualify for ballot placement in that jurisdiction.
Further, I acknowledge that in submitting this form to the National Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, I am subject to the provisions of Rule 13.K of the Delegate Selection Rules for the 2020 Democratic National Convention and Article VI of the Call for the 2020 Democratic National Convention that authorize the National Chairperson to determine whether a presidential candidate has established substantial support for their nomination as the Democratic candidate for the Office of the President of the United States, is a bona fide Democrat whose record of public service, accomplishments, public writings and/or public statements affirmatively demonstrate that the candidate is faithful to the interests, welfare and success of the Democratic Party of the United States, and will participate in the Convention in good faith.
