Maggie Haberman Blasts Trump's Claim Her NY Times Report is 'Fake News': 'That's a Lie'

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman is hitting back at President Donald Trump‘s claim that journalists never reach out to the White House to get a comment from them while covering his administration.

The president is crying “fake news” over the Times‘ explosive report saying he asked former Acting AG Matthew Whitaker to instate an ally of his at the top of the Southern District of New York, which is conducting extensive investigations into the president’s affairs. Trump is also asserting that the stories were written about him “have absolutely no basis in fact” and “the writers don’t even call asking for verification.”

Haberman, who helped write the Times‘ Whitaker report, was asked about Trump’s tweets in an interview on Wednesday with CNN. She reacted by saying she and her colleagues reached out to him on Friday, and this isn’t the first time Trump has made a claim like this.

“I sent several e-mails that went unanswered until yesterday. We went through a detailed list of what we were planning on reporting. They chose not to engage, and afterwards, the president acts surprised. Whether his aides are not telling him what we are looking at or whether this is a game and he knows what it is and he’s pretending, I can’t read his mind. We certainly follow normal reporting practices and went over it at length with the White House and the Department of Justice.”

Haberman finished by saying of Trump’s claim “that’s a lie,” and that “I don’t know if he knows it’s a lie or whether he is telling himself ‘this is true,’ whether his staff doesn’t tell him we are reaching out, but I find it hard to believe that his staff didn’t brief him once again that this kind of a report was coming.”
