Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign is off to an impressive start: The Vermont senator crushed other Democratic candidates in his first day of online fundraising, and boasted social media stats that easily outstripped his competition, too.
The Vermont senator brought in more than $5.9 million from more than 220,000 donors in the 24 hours since he announced his presidential candidacy, according to his campaign. He easily eclipsed other announced 2020 candidates first-day fundraising figures as well as his own in 2015, when he he raked in more than $1.5 million online in the first 24 hours.

The rest of the field is playing catch up with Sanders, currently the only candidate in the Democratic primary who begins on the foundation of a full-blown presidential campaign. But the numbers show that many of his followers are on board with his repeat bid for the White House, at least at this early stage of the campaign.

(113,019 posts)I have a few other preferences this cycle, but, have little doubt that Sanders will be formidable for one essential reason.....his supporters have been organizing for 4 years now, and, lest people forget, they figured out and dominated the caucus system already.
I hoped Sanders would not run again. Just as many Sanders voters have held strong to their resentment of Clinton and Dem party, so do many Clinton voters hold fast to their resentment of Sanders and his most fervent supporters.
Resentment Rd. goes both ways. I am one Dem who will avoid traveling that road. There are other routes to take this primary that have far fewer potholes and problematic distractions for the Democratic voter.

(41,968 posts)I have very specific problems with Bernie. I notice he has a lot of opposition research, some true, some bullshit, that will be used against him. I also dont think he can beat Trump. I wish he has stayed out, but here we are. We can only go forward.

(41,968 posts)And his political teams are something else. Every other candidate will be a neo-lib corporate supporters of the billionaire class So, we will have to battle that, AND the socialism label Trump is going to hammer home.

(41,968 posts)Most people dont seem to understand that nearly everything has an aspect of capitalism to it, and many things have an aspect of socialism to it. They co-exist quite handily.
Bernie is Trump bait, perhaps he can draw attention off other candidates, but I dont see this as a positive move. Other candidates will need to defend the word socialism, free things (nothing is free) and combat the same populist message as before.
I despise slogan politics, I want particulars in any platform. I want the math to work.
For instance Right now my problem with M4A is no one will address the provider/nurse/healthcare worker shortage. And It HAS to be addressed.

(4,131 posts)And I think he would win in 2020. But as it stands I am hoping that Kamala prevails in our primary. I think she also can beat Trump and I think ultimately she will be a better President than Bernie.
