We don't live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do

We do not all have the same advantages in life.

We do not all get the same parents. Some of us are lucky, we get parents who love us, nurture us, and invest their time and energy in making sure we are the best people we can possibly be. Others are not so lucky. They get parents who must work two or three jobs to put food on the table, and don’t have time to check the homework. Or who just don’t know that they should care. Some babies have babies, and they don’t know how to love and nurture in the most appropriate way. Children growing up in those circumstances don’t necessarily learn how to love, how to strive, how to learn. We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all get the same education. Some of us are lucky. We get the education we all deserve. An education that prepares us for the big bad adult world, allowing us to choose a path to success, monetary reward and a fulfilling of our ambitions. Others are not so lucky. Sub-standard education, or a lack of grounding that does not allow an appreciation of the importance of a good education when making life choices. Some of us get to go to a good university, choosing an academic pathway and discipline that will lead to success. Others are not so lucky. For some an academic route is wholly inappropriate and setting them up to fail. For others from lower income families the level of debt accrued at University is a multiple of the family income that they are unable to comprehend. And anyway, they need to earn a living. Help put food on the table. A minimum wage is better than no wage, or huge debts, after all. We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all have the same mindset. Some of us grew up in a positive environment in which we were encouraged to achieve. Told how we could reach for the stars and maybe even catch a few. We were taught the value of persistence, that hard work pays off and if we are really lucky this has borne fruit. Others are not so fortunate. For some their childhood was a desert from hope. No-one cheering from the side-lines to give you a positive mindset. For some as they move into adulthood all they have as role models within their local communities are people on a lifetime of welfare or minimum wage jobs that are unable to put nutritious food on the table, without the occasional visit to a food bank. Within that environment, for the average individual, how do they get to develop the mindset to nurture the skills needed to be the generation that lifts the family out of a low-income existence? We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

We do not all have the same advantages in life.

I am not suggesting, that for some, they can have a truly crappy start in life and raise themselves out of poverty through dint of sweat, blood and tears. And well done to them. But that is not the norm. How we are brought up matters. Education matters. Wages matter. Mindset matters. Society matters. How we help people to be the best they can possibly be matters.

We do not live on a level playing field. I really wish Conservatives would stop pretending that we do!

Just sayin'

attitudes toward equality are the biggest single difference between liberal and conservative personalities and thus between political ideologies arising from them. Not only are they genetically wired in with personality and then reinforced or suppressed culturally, but they are enshrined in thousands of years of culture and religion.

We can take almost any issue in almost any nation and examine it by itself for how it affects equality and know generally how liberals and conservatives there will tend to range on it, without any labels.

But with you in that we need to all keep "wishing." America's conservatives are bigger believers in equality than Saudi Arabia's by far, and that's because America was founded on liberal principles, our conservatives grew up with them as their own traditions, and America's liberals keep the flame going.
