"SNIP.....
According to a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, the hearing will focus on:
How modern authoritarian regimes consolidate and hold onto power;
Those regimes interest in attacking liberal democracy through political influence activities and other forms of intervention;
The role of advanced or Internet-based technologies in the authoritarian toolkit;
The role of the U.S. Intelligence Community and partner democratic intelligence services in collecting information about and analyzing authoritarianism and authoritarian regimes efforts to assert regional or global influence;
The future of U.S. military alliances and security partnerships with backsliding or illiberal democratic countries; and
Americas responsibility to recognize and counter the authoritarian threat as the worlds torchbearer for representative democracy and liberal ideals.

(9,688 posts)And thanks for the reminder (as a counterbalance to the despair I feel every time I read the news about the latest Trumpian antics) how many Democrats have been pouring their energy, commitment, intellect, and heart into saving this country. As you said, Schiff is one of that stellar group.

(15,238 posts)For too long we (the public) have been just reactive at best but complacent at worst.
This type of digging may expose real interests both domestic and foreign. Of course nowadays the major interests have stashes of loot and influence around the world and can't be called nationally-based. Thinking Mercers, Kochs, Murdochs, Bushes. The RW pseudo-academic institutions such as the AEI are fronts for money and interests from everywhere. Dare I bring up AIPAC?

(34,105 posts)heard of some of these Democrats. The new "finds" for me are now some of my favorites even though I have not one clue what their platform would look like. I only know what I read and hear and what I see on television.

All 3 from California. I find myself sitting here in Kansas where we do have a new Democratic governor but a legislature that is possibly more whacked out than even during the Brownback years, trying as hard as they can to keep us there and move us further right wondering how on earth one ever gets to the place where you have people who actually vote for representatives who are not against them.
Anyway, thank you people of California. I intend on one day sitting down and sending a note to the 3 of these guys as a thank you. Whenever I hear from them I know that as bad as it gets they will be there working for us not there because people who have no clue continue to vote against themselves.

(58,785 posts)the 2016 platform up. Seriously, these party leaders are all liberals, no blue dogs, and were there in 2016. Their ideals and values are the same two years later.
Our overall goals won't change much for 2020, but there's already big reprioritizing to move the biggest problems created in this era up and to undo others, such as the human rights atrocities and abuses of the legal system against both citizens and noncitizens that Republicans are trying to institutionalize now.
We need to remember that plans such as to have a half billion solar panels installed on America's homes by 2020 actually advance many interrelated goals, not just one: This was intended to be huge action on the climate crisis; a huge sustainable energy advance with many payoffs -- including advancing national production and personal and household wellbeing; just one part of major infrastructure rebuilding and advances; new skills training and jobs creation programs; and, of course, critically, critically important to national security.
Same for many other items on the list, all now more needed than ever.

(12,448 posts)It's important, and needs to be done. But the meaning will probably elude him. Good move from Adam Schiff, who is in the forefront of the Resistance.
