A hiker on a closed trail at Yosemite National Park was killed Sunday when struck by falling rock and ice, park officials said Monday.
Xuan Wang, 56, of Cupertino, Calif., was hiking along Mist Trail, a popular hike in Yosemite that take hikers on a three-mile round trip to Vernal Fall. But portions of the trail have overhanging rocks where large icicles form and fall on the trail, which was why park officials closed the trail.
"The trail closure is clearly marked and there is a gate on the trail reminding visitors of the closure. Wang ignored the signs, went around the gate and the incident happened on the trail leading to Vernal Fall."

(11,443 posts)Both in winter and spring. I lived for two years near Yosemite and hiked there all the time. The stairs going from bottom of Vernal to Nevada Falls are very slippery and icey.
My first time to hike to top of half dome in one day we started early at 5am and ended up on those stairs after dark since it took longer than we thought. Ran into a small group of hikers and all we had was a pen flashlight. Luckily this was summertime. And before cell phones with flashlights.
I would never go on a long hike again without a flashlight.
