6. This gave me an odd flashback to one of the worst jobs...

...I ever had. I was the temporary and reluctant head nurse in a very small community hospital in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The doc who did most of the admittingto the unit had really antediluvian ideas of what nurses do. He wanted me to accompany him on his morning rounds and hand him the otoscope, etc as he examined patients. Oh, hell no!

This place was like stepping into a time tunnel, and there was no way out of this basic expectation, but I couldn’t make myself do something that subservient. I’d carry the instrument case, put it on the patient’s bed and then step way back and put my hands behind my back.

I justified accompanying him in order to serve as a translator for the parents after he’d leave. He was not an American and had a very heavy accent. I could tell, with rare exceptions, that the parents had no damn idea about what he was saying.
