before Congress: he has nothing to lose. He's being disbarred. He's going to jail. He's recovering from should surgery. His life is a misery. As Kris Kristofferson wrote, "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." He can't be blackmailed. He can't be bribed.
The situation is akin to when I represent law clients pro bono (for free): I am at the same level as "deep pockets" with clients ready to pay whatever is necessary to win. I don't care how much it costs to win too. I can wait a looooooong time. Winning in court is often about how much money can you afford to spend to win or wait for the other side to blink.
Therefore, Trump knows that Cohen can say everything he fears because he has proof/evidence to confirm everything that he's going to testify about. He's credible. There may be some new bombshells.
Yeah, yeah, this won't change the fervor of the Trumpers, but it may make the Republicans nervous about 2020. They saw what happened in 2018.

(50,236 posts)has a chance of being reduced. Apparently, during the first year, the prosecutor can ask the court to reduce the sentence so Cohen will be talking nonstop until after that happens. Lying, on the other hand, could extend his prison term.
