Detroit police officer fired for racially insensitive Snapchat video

A Detroit Police officer accused of racially insensitive comments posted on Snapchat last month was fired effective Wednesday.

Police Chief James Craig, in a press conference via Facebook, said 11 of 24 allegations against former officer Gary Steele were introduced during a chief's hearing this last week.

Craig said the 11 allegations fell under three categories, the social media post incident, improper characterization of community members and knowingly made false statements in interviews during the investigation.

Craig said a chief's hearing for Steele's former partner is tentative for next week. He remains suspended with pay.

Steele shared a video after stopping 23-year-old Ariel Moore for an expired license plate tag. The video, posted on Steele's Snapchat account, showed Moore walking and the video included the captions, "What black girl magic looks like" and "Celebrating Black History Month."
