The very least the current POTUS could have done was visit the "Hanoi Hilton"

CNN's Jim Sciutto visited, posted pictures
@jimsciutto
@MeghanMcCain I visited the “Hanoi Hilton” for the first time yesterday. The cells, shackles and other propaganda - including your father’s flight suit on display - tell a painful story but also a story of strength and service. Both disturbing and inspiring.

In 1992 AND 2010. In November, 1992 we did not have diplomatic relations with Vietnam and I was there as part of John Kerry's MIA POW mission. He was appointed by George H W Bush 41 to lead the mission to help find out what happened to prisoners who did not return after the war. I was a Air Force gofer liaison to the group. It was still an active prison at the time. Shortly after the visit Clinton became president and recognized Vietnam. As a condition for recognition Vietnam had to tear down the prison because Clinton did not want US media to be able to use the prison as a backdrop for reporting when they were doing Vietnam stories.

I visited again in 2010 and most of the area the prison occupied was now a modern office building. They have kept a small area as a museum. They have kept the cell John McCain was held in.
