https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2019/2/28/18245347/amazon-hq2-nyc-cuomo-new-york-times-open-letterSome New Yorkers rejoiced after Amazon announced it would no longer be building a massive, 25,000-employee corporate campus in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens. But others including Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who helped broker the deal with the tech giant were less pleased. And now a group of them are begging Amazon to come back.
Led by Cuomo, a disparate coalition of politicians, business owners, and community activists have signed on to an open letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, urging him to reconsider backing out of the deal, the New York Times reported on Thursday. Signatories include representatives Hakeem Jeffries and Carolyn Maloney, the presidents of four public housing tenant associations, and the CEOs of Goldman Sachs and JetBlue. (Cuomo did not sign the letter.)
We understand that becoming home to the worlds industry leader in e-commerce, logistics and web services would be a tremendous boost for our states technology industry, which is our fastest growing generator of new jobs, the letter reads. We know the public debate that followed the announcement of the Long Island City project was rough and not very welcoming. Opinions are strong in New York sometimes strident. We consider it part of the New York charm! But when we commit to a project as important as this, we figure out a way to get it done in a way that works for everyone.

(33,475 posts)thy opposed the massive give backs and give aways Amazon got to come there. And Amazon did not want to talk to the community about ways for them to help the area. And most of those jobs would be re-locations, not local NYrs getting the jobs.
If they would sit down with the local community, maybe they can offer something to make the massive tax breaks worth it.

Researched, these numbers are dubious in the least.
According to the state, Amazon will generate $27.5 billion in state and city revenue over 25 years, a 9:1 ratio of revenue to subsidiesan arrangement Cuomo called the highest rate of return for an economic incentive program the state has ever offered. This is predicated on the assumption that after the company begins hiring in 2019, Amazon will create 25,000 jobs over the next decade (with up to 40,000 when all is said and done), with an average salary of $150,000. The state estimates the project will facilitate 1,300 construction jobs and 107,000 in total direct and indirect jobs.

Average $150,00o a year? Other sources put it closer to $50,000. And That 107,000 new jobs is just pulled out of someones ass.
Overpromised, as these usually are.
Her is what DiBlasio said:
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement chastising Amazon for not being tough enough to stand up to the deals criticism, adding, We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity. We have the best talent in the world and every day we are growing a stronger and fairer economy for everyone. If Amazon cant recognize what thats worth, its competitors will.
Amazon did not hire a single person from NYC to help effort this deal.

(81,844 posts)It's the support jobs, the restaurants, bars, cleaners, apartment staff, transportation, sanitation, etc. People that move to NY will need child care, teachers, tutors, doctors, office supplies. There is a lot that goes into supporting 25,000 people.
