Distraught GOP consultant hints she may leave party after ‘disgraceful’ display by Trump and CPAC crowd

Susan Del Percio -- screenshot

...................................

Echoing the sentiments of her colleague Rick Tyler on Saturday — who said the Republican Party is no more — Susan Del Percio scalded both the president and the attendees while speaking with MSNBC host Alex Witt.

“What do you think about what he [Tyler] said there and how the president portrayed himself yesterday,” host Witt asked after airing a clip of the GOP consultant gloomily describing the state of the party.

“I think Rick was absolutely right, Alex,” Del Percio replied. “I don’t think it was embarrassing — I think it was an embarrassment. I don’t think it was a speech, I think it was a rant and a disgraceful way for the president of the United States to handle himself.”

“Rick is right about what he’s done to the conservative movement — it’s been completely hijacked,” she continued. “I blame the people in that crowd because they would rather be entertained than face hard realities and face the fact that they have sold themselves out to the great entertainer of our political times. That’s all they have done, they are doing nothing to move forward policies that matter, for us to be taken seriously as a party.”

“I’m fortunate enough that I have some, actually prominent Democrats saying, ‘Please don’t leave the party yet. I know you’re ready to go but we need solid Republicans like yourself to move forward’,” she added.

This radical takeover of the GOP/Conservative movement has been going on for some time,
and went full bore with the tea party infestation while President Obama was in office.
All Trump has done is give these freaks a soapbox.
That is the problem the GOP will have to clear up if they want to exist.
In the meantime, I'm down with anything that cripples the GOP for a few election cycles.
The damage is in process. I believe there will be more indirect and direct damage to the GOP once all of the investigations are complete.

...yes, Trump's true nature has been obvious from the beginning. And the truly honest conservatives--those very few--have seen it from the start. But people are not perfect, and it's hard to face the fact that the party--and movement--you've devoted your life to has gone rotten. How easy would it be for us, if--God forbid--a radical extremist movement hijacked the Democratic Party, and a demagogue used it to slip into the White House? No, we are not them, of course we aren't, and I am not suggesting so. But all human activities are capable of corruption, evil isn't only on one side, and we are all sinners. The sin of pride we see everywhere on the American Right is capable of proliferating among us too. No--Ms Del Pelcio has at least begun to see the light, and this is a good thing. If we liberals framed the issue not as Right vs Left, but as people, liberal and conservative, who believe in facts and empirical evidence, versus Trumpistas...we just might break off enough sane conservatives to make the difference.

Since the Southern Strategy, they have built their brand based upon hate, she was part of that. We built our brand on looking for people's better angels and helping those in need, while protecting everyone's rights.

I feel for her and other republicans that are disgusted with Trump, but it is up to THEM to vote for the democrat in 2020, them sitting home or sucking up the swill and voting for Trump only shows what they are. People in our party has spent decades having people like Ms Del Percio question our patriotism and make stuff up about us. It is up to them to step up and help us save the country, we owe them nothing and must not make any promises to them, we are perfectly capable of saving the country on our own if we avoid 2016 type divisiveness.

...a promise to try and be fact-based, and not empirically-challenged. If we do this--not making any compromises with our values, making it clear we are liberals and expect that everyone in this country believes--or should believe--in liberal democracy...well, we can--as you say--save the country ourselves. But we would also, maybe, get the sane conservatives--whatever their past sins, which I agree with you 100% they're guilty of--to try and move their party a little closer to being the conservative wing of a liberal democracy...instead of being a party committed to liberal democracy's overthrow, as they are now. Is it possible? It better be...
