WASHINGTON House Democrats will offer a resolution Wednesday condemning anti-Semitism in response to Rep. Ilhan Omar's latest remarks on Israel.
The declaration, supported by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, comes after Omar made new remarks about Israel that critics decried as anti-Semitic.
At an event last week, the freshman Democrat from Minnesota made a reference to "political influence in this country that says it is okay for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country."
The Anti-Defamation League has demanded that House Democrats offer a resolution that makes clear every member of Congress opposes anti-Semitism. Democrats over the weekend drafted a resolution with that message, according to a Democratic aide who spoke on condition of anonymity because the document had not been released. Its text was not final as of Monday afternoon.

(7,509 posts)This is a colossally and laughably stupid move on the part of the Democrats.
At this point, Omar should just stick to her guns because it's clear that people on both sides of the aisle are not acting in good faith. If the people in her district don't like the controversy, they can vote her out.

(15,805 posts)Could it be in more obvious how skewed these politicians priorities are? Israel is no more sacrosanct than any of our other allies around the world. They are just as subject to our legitimate criticisms as any other foreign government.
Yet there they are, whiffling sweet terms of endearment to a foreign power that causes us no few headaches, while lambasting one of our own. This is a public show trial that only serves to weaken the party politic. How stupid do we have to be to provide gift wrapped fodder that Republicans, and their henchmen at State TV, will gleefully use against every Dems running for office?

(34,857 posts)Who is being smeared for speaking the truth. Unless you agree with the Democratic response that any questioning of Israel-US relations is unacceptable. What a pitiful party we've become when we're beholden to ANY foreign government - Israel or otherwise.

(17,371 posts)John Kerry and President Obama had no problems being critical of Israel when they disagreed without using this sort of nasty rhetoric.
But if Omar would rather echo the David Dukes of the world, I suppose that is her choice.

Valid critiques of foreign or economic policy need not contain bigotry.

(5,284 posts)Was it acceptable when American citizens of Japanese decent were put into concentration camps because of worries about their divided loyalty? Of course you can question AIPAC but using the term divided loyalty gets into the realm of hate speech.

Please tell me how stating it's unacceptable to question the support of Israel-US relationship is NOT divided loyalty? Would we dare say that about ANY OTHER NATION on earth? Doubtful. We should always question our relationships - JUST like I question the US' current relationship with North Korea. Or Saudi Arabia.

Omar's inability to finesse her critique is far down the list. Her voters get to say how they feel about it in 2020.
