March 5, 2019 at 7:16 am EST By Taegan Goddard
Facing a showdown vote as early as this month over the embattled Green New Deal, Senate Democrats are preparing a counteroffensive to make combating climate change a central issue of their 2020 campaigns a striking shift on an issue they have shied away from for the past decade, the New York Times reports.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) outlined the new strategy in an interview last week, casting it as a way to mobilize millennial voters, a key part of the Democratic constituency that the party will need to turn out to win in swing states.
With progressives pushing Democrats to embrace the Green New Deal and Republicans ridiculing the idea as socialism Mr. Schumer is effectively trying to turn a weakness into a strength. He is planning daily floor speeches attacking Republicans for inaction and a proposal for a special Senate committee focused on the issue, which he intends to announce this week.

OP
Manchin was appointed by the Democratic leadership... Schumer. He's not the chair.

(1,117 posts)1. They must end the filibuster.
Same Senate that appointed Joe Manchin the head of the climate-related energy committee.
1. With Manchin in that role nothing gets done on climate
2. Until 2020 no hope anything gets done on climate.
3. In 2020 even if Dems win a Senate majority nothing gets done on climate unless we end the filibuster.

Provided that everything goes massively our way.

The Republicans hold the majority in the Senate and all doing away with the filibuster would do is give away what's left of the farm when Repubs retake the Senate. I'd argue that the silent filibuster be done away with. It's far to easy to block legislation.
