https://nypost.com/2019/03/04/google-gives-raises-after-finding-out-it-was-underpaying-men/Google has given pay raises to thousands of staffers after finding that it was underpaying some men when compared to women.
The search engine company said in a blog post Monday that an internal audit uncovered several new pay discrepancies, including some male engineers earning less than their female counterparts, despite doing the same job.
Male employees with the job title Level 4 Software Engineer received less discretionary funds than women, the blog post said. The average employee in that position pulls in around $160,000, according to the job review company Glassdoor.
Google said it will be distributing $9.7 million in pay adjustments to 10,677 employees for that and other pay disparities. It did not break down how many of the raises were going to men versus women.
Our pay equity analysis ensures that compensation is fair for employees in the same job, at the same level, location and performance, Google said in the blog post. Well keep working to improve our practices and to ensure that Google is a great place to work for everyone.

(23,374 posts)Many years ago I was working in a home health agency and I complained to my boss that I got paid less than my coworker because I speak Spanish. Although I am not a native speaker I can do my visits in Spanish without the need of an interpreter. At that time they were paying us per visit. We were being payed more for patients with private insurance and less for patients with public aid. The reasoning behind that was the private insurance was paying us more. I argued that because I speak Spanish I had more public aid patients and because I had more public aid patients I got paid less. Thus instead of being paid more for speaking Spanish I was being paid less.
My boss who was a staunch republican actually agreed with me. She could have changed everyone's pay to somewhere in the middle. But, she decided to pay all visits to the private insurance amount. We all got raises. But, I noticed the difference more than my coworkers.

(9,878 posts)In your position I probably would have suddenly forgotten my Spanish, which is not a positive way of solving that problem. It's just that in 30+ years of working I've lost my belief that anything I can do will improve the situation.
