He Kept 2 Lions in His Yard. The Inevitable Just HappenedCzech Michal Prasek mauled to death on family farm
(NEWSER) When Michal Prasek was attacked by a lion in 2012, he admitted it was his own fault. "Every morning I went to feed it, but this time I put on a coat that smelled of dogs," the amateur lion breeder said, per the UK Week. He added that the intervention of a lioness was all that saved him. There was no such reprieve in a horrifying deja vu on Tuesday. The Czech manwho kept a 9-year-old lion and 3-year-old lioness in homemade enclosures on his family's farm in Zdechovwas found mauled to death in the wooden pen of the lion. Prasek's father, who discovered the body around 7am, said the cage had been locked from the inside, per the BBC and Newsweek.
Responding officers shot both lions, with a rep noting the killings were "absolutely necessary for them to get to the man." Prasek, 34, had previously been fined for illegal breeding as neighbors raised concerns about the lions. A cyclist even collided with the leashed lioness as Prasek walked the animal last year. But Prasek refused to let authorities onto his family's property, and as there was no evidence of animal cruelty and apparently no suitable facility for the big cats in the Czech Republic, the issue had been at a stalemate, per the BBC. The latest incident "will perhaps finally help to resolve this long-term problem," Zdechov's mayor is quoted as saying.

Prasek bought the male lion in 2016 and the lioness in 2018. He kept both predators in self-made cages in his backyard in Zdechov, close to the border with Slovakia. In the past, he has been handed fines because he did not secure planning permission before building the enclosures.
In response, Prasek reportedly refused to allow anyone representing the local authorities onto his property, leaving the two sides at an impasse. The BBC explained that authorities were unable to forcibly remove the animals because keeping them was not illegal, there is a lack of alternative facilities in the Czech Republic and there was no evidence of cruelty towards the animals.
Zdechov Mayor Tomas Kocourek told local media that Prasek would often walk his lions around the local area on a leash, prompting regular complaints from other local residents.
Prasek was in the news in June 2018 when a cyclist crashed into his lioness while Prasek was taking her for a walk. The cyclist was eventually able to fight the animal off using his bike, but still required hospital treatment. The incident was eventually classed as a traffic accident after local police were called to investigate.
Today's incident will perhaps finally help to resolve this long-term problem, Kocourek said.

That's not a promising endeavor for amateurs, methinks. Amateur lion breeders are likely to be prime candidates for Darwin awards.

That ranks right up there among my favorite hobbyist pursuits such as "Amateur Heart surgeon", or "Amateur Electrician".

Todays incident will perhaps finally help to resolve this long-term problem. Ya think?
Too bad about the cats. But its the classic problem with big cats. Too many in captivity, too few in the wild.
