Fox News is a cancer on my country

I know this is no big news to any DUer but I was just at the gym and that crap was on the TV in front of the elliptical machine I was on (going to the mountains in western MD for some x-country skiing) and they had this on the bottom of the screen, "Is AOC going to jail?"

And every time, I marvel at how intentionally ridiculous and dumbed-down all of the "news" stories are. I'll take fear and anti-intellectualism for $1,000, Alex.

They actually take it seriously.

It's one thing to watch Porky Pig. It's quite another to believe he's real.

But since 2001, you can only order exploding tennis balls in packages of six or less, to minimize the danger of a massive terror attack by Islamist coyotes out there in Monument Valley.

I only use mine very sparingly, like when I notice I am being followed by Jehovah's Witnesses, members of the Romanian Mafia, people in white hoods or people soliciting contributions for the Republican Party (I realize there may at times be some overlapping there).

As if sitting in the waiting room of a dentist's office wasn't a horrifying enough experience? When I asked him nicely (after he worked on my teeth, of course!) to possibly consider the feelings of his patients who weren't conservatives he blamed his receptionist for keeping the channel tuned into Faux. When I asked her on my way out she promptly blamed him.

I never went back to that dentist again. Now that he knew I was a liberal, that scene from the movie "Marathon Man" flashed through my cabeza, where Dustin Hoffman was strapped to a chair with a Nazi war criminal mercilessly drilling holes in his teeth asking him continuously "Is it safe?".

I now go to a nice Chinese dentist here in Brooklyn. His waiting room doesn't even have a TV. It's nice and peaceful.

Go up to the front desk, or ask for the manager. Ask politely if the channel on those TVs - or a few - or even ONE of those TVs - can be changed. Ask them. You might get a favorable result. Maybe nobody’s stepped up and complained yet. So how would they know it’s offensive if nobody speaks up?

If you’re rebuffed, at least your objection has been voiced. And if your request gets turned down, then put it in writing. Send it to management. And tell them you’ve been a loyal paying customer but you can’t abide by all the TVs turned ONLY to Fox News. (I call it Pox Noise but your letter is not the only place for insults. You’re playing it straight in this). AND TELL THEM that you asked politely to have the channel changed and were turned down. Express your regrets that your concerns were rebuffed and add that you may have to find a different place to work out, if your customer request is ignored like this. Be polite, but firm.

You are now on the record. You just cast a vote. So at the very least, management knows not all their customers are happy with their choice of stations. Someone higher up the food chain is gonna notice, and have the channel changed.

I did this myself and had both results. At our neighborhood bank, they had Pox Noise on the monitor. I complained to the teller when I got to the teller window. Next time, nothing had changed. So I complained a second time - to a different teller. Third time I went in there, STILL nothing had changed. So I complained AGAIN, as soon as I finished my transaction with yet another teller. Fourth time? Hey! They had CNBC on there!

Just out of curiosity, I went over to the manager’s desk and commented - “hey! I just noticed you switched away from Fox News! Wow - that’s GREAT! I just wanted to thank you! It’s MUCH appreciated!” And then I added - “I’m just curious - what made you guys change it?” The manager replied “we’ve had complaints.”

Now I don’t know if others complained, too, or if it was just those several complaints of mine. Doesn’t matter! Makes NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER!!! The only thing that matters is that the damn channel got changed!

On the other hand, there was this restaurant at the airport in Camarillo that had Pox Noise on a big flat screen. After we’d ordered, I asked our server if the channel could be changed. She went away and evidently asked. She returned and said that wouldn’t be possible. The owner had decreed that it ALWAYS be tuned to Pox Noise.

In that case you concede. Don’t make a fuss but decide you’re never eating there again. You might leave that verbal reminder with the server, at the end, after you’ve eaten and you’re paying your tab. quietly and politely to ask that they pass along to the owner that he just lost a customer because of his refusal to accommodate your wish as a paying customer not to have your meal ruined by a constant barrage of Fox News on the big screen.

For those places that won't change, maybe a mention of that fact in a yelp review would help. It may reveal you're not the only one objecting, or reveal you were in the heart of unfriendly territory.

I tried complaining once and I was told by a manager that he understood that Fox News
was controversial but it had to stay on because people needed to hear "both sides" of the
issues. I told him it was a cancer on the country that I love and only 17% of the time
when they gave "a fact" was what they were saying true. I might have well been talking to
a log. I think having on Fox News is corporate policy. I think they have a dozen screens
up a 4 of them are Fox .... 2 Fox News national and 2 of them a local Fox station which is
OK some of the time but even their local news shows pushes the bull shit such as "has Mueller
overstepped his bounds?"

Maybe a national boycott on planet fitness might wake them up.

who puts up those screen scroll graphics for FAUX. I've only met her a couple of times, most recently a couple of years ago when she was in my city for a conference and my mother thought it would be a good idea to get together for dinner. The meal was uncomfortable (to say the least) but my brother, who despises Repukes, went right for the jugular asking her if she was ashamed to "put up shit like 'Is Obama a terrorist?'" She tried to laugh it off, but I could tell the truth stung.

asked the person at the front desk about switching the channel. For an hour, several of us tried to change it with 3 different remote controls, and it would not go away -- must have been a back channel to hell or something.

If management never hears a complaint, the automatic assumption is that whatever they’re doing or whatever channel the TV’s tuned to, it’s okay with everybody.

They HAVE TO hear that the exact opposite is true - that everybody’s NOT okay with it.

Silence gets you nowhere. Complain! But ALWAYS be polite about it. Getting angry or upset can be counterproductive. There’s probably gonna be somebody who’ll revel in your discomfort, but we already know trump’s fans can often be really mean/spirited and downright schmucky. Your getting upset will only delight them and make them feel somehow vindicated or superior, or trigger their “too fucking BAD, snowflake!” mentality. Don’t give them that opening. Some of the worst of these assholes have a big fat chip on their shoulders and would just love picking a fight with a “libtard.”

Always be BETTER than that (AND them)! Because YOU’RE the one on the right side in this case.

Ruin their day. Deny them a fight.
