No, @realDonaldTrump. You were not first in your class at Penn. This is what happens when you spend years falsely accusing other people to make you feel better about your own ineptitude. I am a lifelong republican who has jumped ship for good. Disgraceful, sir. #SummaCumLiar

(4,473 posts)In the Ivy League, there is something called the "Gentleman's C". This is a passing grade given to men of "good families" (George W Bush undoubtedly got some at Yale) or whose families had given a lot of money to the school (which is where Trump comes in) who should be given less than passing grades. It is one of the less endearing traditions of the Ivy League.
When I was in graduate school at Harvard, I spent a semester as a teaching assistant, teaching an intro class in history of the Christian religion. There was one student, the scion of a Boston Brahmin family, who deserved an F in the class, so I gave him one. The history department chairman called me into his office, explained the Gentleman's C, and told me to change this one grade. I didn't want to, so he changed it. (I then found myself another job at the university computer center, which, to my delight, paid considerably more.)

(31,261 posts)It was when a student barely scraped by to graduation by piling up C's. But your illustration of it is the more traditional one.
Many people don't realize how many kids of rich, prominent families get into the top colleges in the country because of their family, nothing else. The same people vigorously decry what they see as giving an advantage to a POC kid who is head and shoulders above many of his or her rich White classmates on ability and capacity to truly succeed in college.

For decades, the national media has reported that Trump graduated "first in his class" at Wharton, often confusing his undergraduate degree with the Ivy League university's top-ranked MBA program.

He did once date Candice Bergen while both attended Penn. She was honest and said she didn't graduate. The only thing she could remember about her date was that his suit, shoes and car all matched...all were the same shade of burgundy.
"I was 18, Bergen said of the time of her date. He was a nice-looking guy, I mean, he was. And I was in college, and its where he was going to be going to college
It was like a blind date. He called me in the dorm. I was bored, she explained. (Bergen attended the University of Pennsylvania just like Trump, although she eventually left the school to pursue her modeling and acting career.)
"But thats not all: He picked me up. He was wearing a burgundy three-piece suit with burgundy patent leather boots, and he was in a burgundy limousine, so it was very color-coordinated. I was home by nine. When pressed, she clarified that nine was P.M., not A.M. It was a very short dinner, she noted."

(31,261 posts)He knew that he didn't have a ton of intellectual firepower and he readily accepted that. He would always tell me and some others that all he was shooting for was a college record full of gentleman C's, because that was all that was needed, anything was excess if a person was just there to get a decent job after finishing undergrad. Turns out that he was a really smart guy, in retrospect.
