When Bush Jr. essentially stole the 2000 election, and did the same in 2004, he claimed a mandate for significant change in each instance.
When Obama legitimately and won massively in 2008, the US corporate media told us all that it was necessary for the Democrats to seek common ground with the GOP. There was no talk of a mandate even thought the Democrats controlled Congress and the Presidency.
In 2016, Trump only won the Electoral College, losing the popular vote, and even that EC vote was due to voter suppression and Russian interference. And we cannot forget that the same corporate media essentially created the myth of Trump, the brilliant businessman and master dealmaker.
And Trump claims a mandate.
So is a mandate something that can only be claimed by the GOP?

As in, supply side economics, an idea with no evidence to support it, but one that the GOP promotes constantly..

It has proven better than any Viennese shrink's swinging pocket watch ever could have at hypnotizing the rubes into believing something that is false is true, all while their pockets are being picked.

(1,773 posts)If ever there was a grotesque example of media mythology making 101 it was the syrupy, nostalgia-based pulp fed to the American people during that asshole's eight years of rule. That's when we really dropped the soap as a nation and we've been shaky legged ever since.

Trump is a brutally open racist.
