During the German occupation of Paris, Pablo Picasso continued to work in his studio there. One day a German officer stopped by to see what Picasso was painting. Picasso let him in and took him for a little tour of his workplace. When the officer was getting ready to leave, Picasso gave him a postcard size replica of "Guernica" (then safely at MOMa in NYC) He said to the officer, "Take it, it's a little souvenir."
The officer paused as he looked at the photograph and said "You did this?"
To which Picasso said "No. You did."

(63,900 posts)It's too bad that MOMa couldn't keep it but it really belonged in Spain. I had a friend who grew up in Greenwich, CT and he was able to see it before it left. Lucky guy!

(63,900 posts)A fabric artist copied this painting and it was displayed at the UN. Colin Powell, then Sec/State, was slated to give his speech there at the time of our invasion of Iraq (remember "shock and awe"?). When his staff realized he would be standing in front of an artwork that was a testament against such an attack, there was a hastily covering of the tapestry behind him when he spoke.
Shock and awe, indeed...

(63,900 posts)I read that Picasso was glad his painting was at MOMa. "It will be safe there" he said.
