I almost was the victim of one, decades ago, it's still legal for this version, but is not ethical and I told them so.
A local Kirby vacuum cleaner outlet was advertising for vacuum cleaner repairmen.
BUT...
"Oh, we filled that job, but we need salesmen..."
I told them to take their job and their vacuum cleaner and shove it.
Target 2 Consumer Alert: BBB releases job scam report information
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - It's the scam costing more people more money: job scams. According to a new report from the Better Business Bureau they are the riskiest scams.
These are really the people who can least afford to fall victim to a scam and to lose money, said Susan Bach with the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.
Job scams are getting more deceptive and costly. There were 50,0000 complaints filed last year on the Better Business Bureau's Scamtracker on its website.

(46,314 posts)Weeks after I walked out of that Kirby outlet, they STILL were advertising for "repairmen."
I complained to the local paper about the false advertising, and they stopped running those ads, later.

(57,063 posts)told me about Amway soaps being bio-degradable and didn't put nitrogen into the water like store-bought detergents did. They had been organic truck farmers since the fourties. That was in the early 60's. It wasn't till the 90's it became impossible to buy the products because everybody wanted to be a distributor not a retailer. How that isn't a pyramid scam even if they do have a product I do not know.

I think their first step from their upline is to go through their high school yearbooks and tell them to cold message old classmates. The worst are the weight loss ones--- message someone you haven't spoken to in years and tell them they're fat.

(4,492 posts)I was just out of college and desperate to get out of retail. I saw an ad on Craigslist for a company called 'Child Safety Inc." I get the interview and come in. They ask me back for the following day for a day-long interview. I was attracted to weekends off (something you don't get in retail).
THe job involved traveling to Big Box stores and setting up a folding table outside and hawking shit like t-shirts with charities' logos on them (in our case DARE). We were sent to a Walmart an hour away. You were with 1 coworker and gas for the driver was expected to be paid out of the passenger's pocket.
I accept and get sent out the following day, a Friday. The day begins with a 'morning meeting' which could best be described as a pep rally. All of the successful people were asked what their goals were and they all said 'Another City" which was code for "I want to expand this company in Another City." There was loud background music at club like volume. (Nobody there was over 30)
I was sent to Barnes and Noble with a coworker to go hawk shit. She goes to smoke in my car and I tell her no (as a non-smoker, I don't want anyone smoking in my car). When I am unloading the car after the shift, she tells on me to the boss and said that I am not a team player. I take the weekend off and go back on Monday. Again with the same coworker and I get in trouble again for not allowing people to smoke in my car.
That Tuesday, I faked a family emergency and call out. I never came back. IN the 4 days I was there, I made less than $100 (this was 2006). Compensation was never discussed in the interview process.

(13,885 posts)Got hired at this small hospital. Routine radiology tech position. When I got there it entailed a lot more responsibility with no extra money. Basically a managers position with employees that did not want or need a manager. The administration was trying to pull a fast one on the other employees. I was not gonna have anything to do with this. I started putting out feelers and got another job with in a month. No notice, I just left.... fuck'em. You mess with me, I mess with you... Karma's a bitch...
