Olympian Kelly Catlin, who helped the United States win the womens pursuit team silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games, has died, USA Cycling said on March 10. The three-time world champion was 23.
The U.S. cycling community suffered a devastating loss with the passing of Kelly Catlin, USA Cycling President and Chief Executive Rob DeMartini said in a statement. Kelly was more than an athlete to us, and she will always be part of the USA Cycling family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Catlin family. This is an incredibly difficult time and we want to respect their privacy, the statement added. The entire cycling community is mourning this immense loss.
VeloNews reported that Catlins father, Mark, said in a letter to the publication that she died on Friday night at her home in California. Her father told the publication that she died by suicide.

We have GOT to do MORE to notice the signs of depression. This young woman was in pain. And now we've lost her to that pain. In this cold, ugly, bitter, increasingly-nasty, angry, divided world, we simply MUST do better.
Educate yourself about depression. Know what to look for. Intervene. Give hugs. Be kind to one another. Share love.

(14,488 posts)After reviewing an article in the Denver Post on this tragedy as well as her Wikipedia bio, this causes me to reflect on what our society does to far too many of our youth with our demands for extreme entertainment and the push for greater and greater achievement with no end.
She was also recovering from a recent concussion and was under substantial pressure to do more. So, I ponder and ask myself this:
What right do we have to pressure others to perform to our satisfaction?
This young woman was an accomplished academic with degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Chinese, and was enrolled for studies towards a graduate degree in Computational and Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University. She was a member of the U.S. womens pursuit team that won a silver medal during the 2016 Olympic Games.
Quote:
I myself have suffered to a lesser degree with this problem, as society fails to evaluate and accept our personality type or mental characteristics, our deep personal desires and ambitions but most importantly, our mental, physical and emotional limitations and what each of us really needs to be happy and content.

(5,624 posts)Kelly Catlin had suffered a concussion a few months ago but continued to push herself, Christine said, not letting up on training for upcoming world cycling competitions and the 2020 Tokyo Games, Christine said.
She just felt like she couldnt say no to everything that was asked of her, and this was her only escape. She had suffered a concussion a few months ago and had not been the same mentally ever since, Christine said. She was overtraining, and she needed a break. She clearly needed a break after the concussion because she couldnt train as hard as she used to. She was seeing bright lights, getting horrible headaches and having racing thoughts, and still trying to go as hard as ever.
