(100,060 posts)By the artists for using their songs without permission. Most recently was REM who told Trump to shove it after using "Everybody Hurts"..
I do love it when the artistes tell them to stop using their music

(82,849 posts)Way back in the early 1980s, Nike wanted to use the Beatles' song "Revolution" for an ad. The surviving members of the band (John had already been assassinated) flatly refused to lend their song to an advertisement. Phil Knight whined, wheedled, cajoled, and pouted, but never made any headway. He offered a meeting with Paul, George and Ringo, but they didnt take him up on the offer. I suspected they thought it was a ploy by Knight to meet them. The reasons offered by various artists was that they didnt write their songs to sell shoes or insurance or cars, and the didnt want to look like sell-outs to their fans.
Nowadays, though, selling out seems to be a positive career move. I counted something like five products that used Portugal the Mans song Feel It Still in their ads. Other songs still in popular rotation have shown up in ads, so its not just the nostalgia for an earlier time like using Here Comes the Sun.
I dont begrudge any artist the chance to make money, but I do notice that my hand involuntarily changes the station when Feel It Still or Believer (Imagine Dragons) comes on.

(100,060 posts)Prince was so vehemently anti-commercial, so using his songs to move products is a slap in the face to his art, and fuck Capitol One for it.
