While Hiking Bloated Military Spending, Trump Budget Would Slash Medicaid By $1.1 Trillion

The president is attempting to hand the Pentagon even more than it asked for while gutting programs for ordinary Americans

by Jake Johnson, staff writer Published on Monday, March 11, 2019 by Common Dreams

While giving the bloated Pentagon "even more than it hoped for" by boosting U.S. military spending to $750 billion—an increase of $34 billion from last year—President Donald Trump's 2020 budget would cut Medicaid by $1.1 trillion over the next decade.

Set to be unveiled on Monday, the president's budget will call for a total of $2.7 trillion in cuts to safety net programs, environmental protection, food and housing assistance, and foreign aid over ten years, according to a summary reviewed by the Washington Post.

Top House Democrats were quick to declare the president's request—which will also demand $8.6 billion in border wall funding—dead on arrival.

Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-N.Y.), chair of the House Appropriations Committee, said the proposal is "not even worth the paper it's written on."

Trump's call for deep cuts to Medicaid—which insures over 70 million low-income Americans—is in line with his administration's previous budgets and his efforts to kick millions off the program by approving punitive work requirements at the state level.

And still be the #1 military in the world.

And even deeper cuts to oil and gas industries. End all subsidies, except for those who are converting fossil to natural energy.

Spending freeze across the board for all departments until further notice. They can spend what they are budgeted for, but anything budget-busting will be deeply cut to 25% if it is Republican-related bullshit.

My daughter works on mental health department in a hospital. Medicaid is the predominant payee and needless to say these individuals do not have steady employment records. Many are there because they hurt or attempted to hurt others or themselves so you don't want them walking the streets. For those who do have medical problems as well, you don't want them dying in the streets as well.

I wonder how many middle class folks realize granny's LTC is paid for by Medicaid. Granny comes into your home or dies in her apartment.

My daughter is a new nurse (1 and 1/2 years) that is good at her job and would like to make mental health her career (not many do since it has little social prestige), but the lurking possibility that no one will pay for it going forward is always present. I told her to think about getting a job in a Hollywood dry out clinic, but of course plenty with her training will be doing just that.

Trump's attack Americans budget is DOA.

It does give you a look at what a republican white house and Congress would be passing without a thought or a bad word against it!

There is nothing to worry about because the dems control the House of Representatives.
