People tweeting this weekend with Burlington's hashtag called out a Craigslist rental that listed racial specifications for would-be tenants.
"Nice clean apartment in downtown Burlington. Near church street. . 850 a month . No pets White Vermonters only."
Twitter users discussed the legality of setting down these restrictions, with one arguing the owner of the rental property can choose who uses their space, while the original person who tweeted a photograph of the Craigslist post said federal law made it illegal to discriminate.

(1,773 posts)semesters and responded to an ad advertising a room for rent in Burlington. It was cheap, it was cozy, and it was being rented by bigot.
Everything went well initially as this seemingly sweet, cordial older lady showed me the room, introduced me to her pet dog (Humphrey...cool name for a dog), and poured me a glass of very tasty iced tea.
She then asked me what my full name was. She chuckled when I told her and asked me to spell it. When I did she said "Oh dear, are you Italian?" I answered yes. She then asked me "You don't do a lot of cooking, do you? Because I can't stand the smell of garlic". Not knowing what else to say to this old lady whom I was starting to really like just ten seconds earlier, I told her, "No, I don't cook".
I reckon most people would have gotten angry and yelled but I was mostly just stunned and disappointed. I told her I'd call her later regarding the room, left, and never went back.
Oh well. What can you do?
