'Catnip Cocktail' linked to bizarre, irrational behavior on the rise in NJ, police say

Keldy Ortiz, North Jersey Record Published 10:44 p.m. ET March 11, 2019 | Updated 6:50 a.m. ET March 12, 2019

"Catnip Cocktail" is a drug used to sedate animals that can make humans act irrationally and unable to answer simple questions, but it's not illegal.

Fairfield police encountered the product in New Jersey last week when they raided the Nutrition Zone store on Route 46. They found 61 bottles of Catnip Cocktail for sale.

John Sirico of Tafton, Pennsylvania, faces drug offenses and weapons charges, borough Police Chief Anthony Manna said in a statement. Bottles of human growth hormones, seven handguns and rifle magazines were discovered in the store.

Catnip Cocktail is a liquid drug used to sedate cats and is not intended for human consumption, borough police said. When the drug is used by humans, it’s similar to Gamma-Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB,) which is known as the “date rape” drug. People who used the drug have been found incoherent by police.

"This is a very dangerous product, and it appears its improper use is on the rise," Manna said in a statement.

It's really cool. You should try it.
Yeah, but what is it?
It's called catnip cocktail. Try it.
Have you tried it?
Sure. It's great. Try it.
OK. (gulp)

Two hours later:

Where am I?
St. John's ER.
What happened?
Did you take something?
Maybe. I can't remember.
Well, we're just going to keep you here for observation.

People have been doing stupid shit like taking random drugs with no knowledge of what it is or how it might affect them. Just for a lark. Sometimes it is no big deal. Other times it ends disastrously. Guess that was/is the appeal. Kind of like Russian roulette in a bowl.

So this scheme is just another variation on that theme. Here is something with a cutesy name — drink it. You’ll like it. Hmmm, maybe slow down long enough to think about what might happen?? Whadda ya think about that, Sparky??

Why would you even want to take a drug whose purpose is just to sedate cats? And the dumbasses who use it probably have no idea what a safe dose would be, even if there is one for people. Dumbass maybe thinks, "OK, a cat weighs ten lbs., I weigh 180 lbs., but if I take 18 times as much I'll just be sedated. So if I want to get high maybe I should take 36 times as much. Yeah, that'll do it."

If there is 1 drug known to be 'the Date Rape drug' ... that one drug is clearly Roofies.

There's been like 2 cases ever that I recall of someone accused of administering GHB to someone surreptitiously for purpose of sex assault.

GHB is much more of a party drug, which was beloved by Ravers the world over for like a decade. Along with E, of course.

Just saying ... this misnomer has always annoyed me.

I tried that stuff once. Woke up in custody being watched closely. They say say i went to a bar and knocked all the bottles and glasses to the floor. They tried to grab me but i darted out the door and got away. They picked me up a few hours later trying to squeeze into a mailbox.

But that wasn't the worst. Apparently there were dozens if pictures and videos of my aberrant behavior posted all over the internet. I’ll never live it down.
