An Oxford Researcher Says There Are Seven Moral Rules THat Unite Humanity

"Morality, he says, is meant to promote cooperation. “People everywhere face a similar set of social problems, and use a similar set of moral rules to solve them,” he says as lead author of a paper recently published in Current Anthropology. “Everyone everywhere shares a common moral code. All agree that cooperating, promoting the common good, is the right thing to do.”

For the study, Curry’s group studied ethnographic accounts of ethics from 60 societies, across over 600 sources. The universal rules of morality are:

1. Help your family
2. Help your group
3. Return favors
4. Be brave
5. Defer to superiors
6. Divide resources fairly
7. Respect others’ property”

Climate scientists when it comes to climate change
and doctors when it comes to vaccines and other medical issues are a couple that come to mind. You know, instead of just going by your gut.

I was thinking of "superiors" as authority figures, those in charge, or some jerk in the White House serving as leader of the Free World despite getting fewer votes.

I like your definition better.

1. Screw over the others' family
2. Discriminate against those not of your group
3. Return disfavor for disfavor
4. Be brave for your tribe
5. Be a sycophant to the rich
6. Take whatever resources you can get away with, if those you took them from are too weak too bad.
7. See 6.

Those are moral imperatives to some.

Being brave can mean sticking your neck out, which goes against the rest of the rules.

Shorthand for "Do what needs to be done for the good of the community". Which can be pretty psychotic, when taken to the extreme, because who decides what needs to be done for the good of the community?

What happens when there's a conflict between needs and motivations?

My moral rules are "Treat others the way you want to be treated", "Find Solutions" and "Don't make things worse".

My moral requirements are: Be Aware, Be Honest, and Take Responsibility.

Be aware of what you are doing and for what reason.
Be aware of what others are doing and for what reason.
Be aware of any needs or dangers around you and others.
Be honest with yourself.
Be honest your actions and interactions.
Be honest about the people you interact with.
Take responsibility for your actions - and your inactions.
Don't take responsibility for other's actions unless you manipulated their circumstances.

Because sometimes, in my experience, you can't be fair, or helpful, or a "team player" - and still do the right and moral thing.
Fair is where you show off your skills in animal husbandry, gardening, or crafts.

That's my take.

Haele
