What was the "entirely separate investigation" that spun off the college admissions investigation?
First I read that one of the students involved was Chinese (or, at least, was falsely said to have played on a China national team).
And then I read that the investigation had its roots in an entirely separate investigation.
So it occurred to me, just a totally wild guess, that maybe they were working on some kind of unrelated corruption case related to China . . .

Mr. Lelling, the United States attorney, said that the first lead in the case came when the target of an entirely separate investigation gave prosecutors a tip that the bribery and cheating might be occurring.

In one case, a former USC womens soccer coach and the consultant allegedly worked together in 2017 to help a clients child get into Yale in exchange for $1.2 million from the family. A false athletic profile created for the student said she played competitive soccer and had been on Chinas junior national development team.

One of the cooperating witnesses, according to court documents, is a former head coach of Yales womens soccer team, who pleaded guilty in the case nearly a year ago and has since been helping FBI agents gather evidence. That coach, Rudolph Meredith, allegedly took a $400,000 bribe to pretend to place a student on the team and help get her into the school, even though the student did not play competitive soccer, officials said. The students parents paid $1.2 million in bribes, officials said.
