"While not a tropical system, winds will rival what's seen in a Category 1 hurricane," said weathermodels.com meteorologist Ryan Maue.
The worst weather is forecast for the Plains, from Texas up to the Dakotas. "We expect a major blizzard to unfold with winds likely to approach hurricane force, heavy snow and massive drifts," according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
Wednesday, 1-2 feet of snow and howling winds will lash portions of Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska, where blizzard warnings are in effect. The National Weather Service warned of "impossible travel conditions."
"You risk becoming stranded if you attempt to travel through these conditions," it said.
A blizzard warning was issued for Denver, where 4-7 inches of snow and wind gusts of up to 44 mph are forecast for Wednesday. At Denver International Airport, delays and cancellations will be likely, AccuWeather said.

(102,234 posts)a very deceptively warm spell. So, too this one. Warm, sunny and 60 degrees today and still quite warm this evening (comparatively).
DIA has already canceled 500+ flights in anticipation, so I'm guessing the meteorologists feel pretty confident. Fortunately, I'm staying put tomorrow, but a friend has a flight out that supposedly is still scheduled. (I'm betting not, but, who knows)

He's been manufacturing this B.S. since then.

A republican can be correct, and that fact still has no bearing them knowing what the hell they're talking about.

Niagara
(7,602 posts)As we deal with climate change it makes the atmosphere warm up which leads to more moisture.
As a storm (in this case a winter storm) approaches it grabs all that moisture which creates heavier participation and makes the storm more intense and more dangerous.
I'm trying to be nice even though it's obvious that I'm dealing with a troll.

I award you no points and please go check your blood sugar level. I suspect that it may be higher than normal.

(10,134 posts)but we're having high winds. Aside from the usual branches and other tree debris (accursed eucalyptus!) I saw a gate torn off its hinges on my walk today.

(5,810 posts)My husband and I went skiing mostly in Colorado in March. One year we went out on a dinner sleigh ride on our last night. Or what we thought was our last night. It was snowing like crazy with winds blowing a gale. Turned out it was the beginning of a blizzard that led to us staying in a Keystone another day and limping into Denver the day after that and one more day in a Denver before we finally were able to catch a flight out. I still remember creeping along I-70 seeing the huge piles of snow and the cars abandoned with flags sticking up to warn the snowplows. It made a great vacation a memorable one in more ways than one!
I'm glad to hear that you and your hubby got home safely.

(16,377 posts)In the area, including Boulder Valley, which I never remember them doing with only a forecast. Looking at the weather map, it appears to just barely scrap Boulder County and will be hitting south of here a lot harder. My joints, muscles, and bones are aching like hell, though.
