I'm anti death penalty but I want it defeated by state amendment and not executive action I don't think it will stand it probably will be a wedge against us in 2020 just not seeing much good out of this

(14,565 posts)Same reason. Can't see how this helps in 2020, especially if we nominate out of California and that state becomes a symbol of socialism and stance on crime, etc.
Besides, that East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker case is heading through the system in California. Probably won't reach trial in 2020 or earlier but easily could be used as example of someone who deserved death penalty, based on 50+ rapes and apparently 10+ murders.
Some of our politicians are miserable at understanding situational influence. I'm reminded of that thread here recently, asking if we could play the long game for once. Democrats prefer tunnel vision today and bewilderment at consequences tomorrow.

(24,393 posts)ballots, things like that anti-gay Prop 8 that was approved in Nov 2008. It took us four years to get that fucking piece of legislation overturned.
Prop 7 from 1978 was another one of these ballot initiatives, put on the ballot by RWers during an off-year (non-presidential election) when liberal voters tend to stay home. The law has lead to the execution of 13 people at a cost of over $4-billion to the state.
Here's a thought: CA has a representative legislature. How about we elect them and let them do the legislating?
I applaud Gov Newsome for having the sense to overturn this barbaric law, a law that is totally out of step with the CA of 2019. 40 years of barbarism is enough.

(14,916 posts)the proportion of the electorate who is going to swing their vote in his re-election bid 3.5+ years from now based on this one issue is f-ing miniscule.
People are going to vote based on health care, education, infrastructure, and taxes, like they always do. And 3/4 of those issues tip voters towards D. Add in that he's an incumbent, and this won't cause him much friction in the end.
He can always bang on about "look how much money I saved" if he wants to placate some of those righties. Only the truly sick blood-thirsty ghouls are going to keep their undies in a wad about this, and they can take a f-ing flying leap. He shouldn't be courting the votes of those sociopaths anyway.
