Manafort hearing: Judge not buying his fake apology today

Natasha Bertrand ✔ @NatashaBertrand

Oof. Judge ABJ has called out Manafort over his comments today-- says they seem to have been prompted by the comments he made at the last hearing. Says "elements of remorse and acceptance of responsibility" in submissions so far have been "completely absent."

Jackson is laying out the facts about Manafort's confinement. Says defense team's constant use of term "solitary confinement" was "disingenuous." "The defendant was not in the SHU," she says, noting the amenities he had during his confinement.

Judge Jackson said "saying I'm sorry I got caught is not an inspiring plea for leniency," & concluded the defense argument that Paul Manafort would have evaded punishment if not for the special counsel "falls flat." She said the arg is being repeated "for some other audience."

The judge slams Manafort and his lawyers for making the "unsubstantiated" claim that Manafort was only charged by Mueller's office because they couldn't charge him with anything related to the campaign. "The noncollusion mantra is simply a non sequitor"

Jackson says 30 months of her sentence must be concurrent with the EDVA sentence, because the tax and reporting crimes were covered in both cases (and in EDVA he got 24 months for the tax crimes and 30 months for the reporting crime, to run concurrent)

If my math is correct, subtracting the 9 months Manafort has already served that Ellis gave him credit for, Manafort is set to serve just under 7 years in prison.

The EDVA sentence is subsumed by the DC sentence. Manafort is serving a total of 73 months.

Edit. Unless Federal sentencing allows a way to split a sentence. The 30 months concurrent and 30 months consecutive for one criminal sentence is a new one for me.
