2. The FAA might as well ground the damn thing at this point

until they figure out what happened. The flight data recorder from the last one has been retrieved and the answer is probably there. I think the last time an entire type was grounded was in 1979, following a DC-10 accident following takeoff from ORD. In that case the FAA decided to "err on the side of safety." https://awin.aviationweek.com/Portals/aweek/media/DC-10/DC-10-1.html

7. That's right; I'd forgotten about that. But there weren't very many 787s at that time.

This would be a much bigger hit for Boeing because there are so many of the 737-MAX airplanes. McDonnell-Douglas really took it in the shorts after the 10s were grounded for five weeks because of the number of airplanes in service. But if the MAX problem is a computer glitch they should be able to correct it pretty quickly.

3. The list is getting longer

Here is a list of countries that have banned the 737 MAX 8 in response. If listed in parentheses, that means an airline based in that country has grounded its fleet, but it does not necessarily mean the plane is banned from the country.

Argentina (Aerolineas Argentinas)
Australia
Brazil (Gol Linhas Aereas)
Canada
Cayman Islands (Cayman Airways)
China
Egypt
Ethiopia
European Union nations
Fiji
Hong Kong
Iceland (Icelandair)
India
Indonesia
Kosovo
Kuwait
Lebanon
Mexico (Aeromexico)
Mongolia
New Zealand
Norway (Norwegian Airlines)
Oman
Singapore
South Africa (Comair)
South Korea
Thailand (Thai Lion Air)
Turkey
United Arab Emirates
United Kingdom
Vietnam

5. Heard the user manual was called "almost criminally" inadequate.

I don't know for planes, but good user manuals result from pride in product and service, not investment of billions of dollars. If this is true, it's very damning. The kind of deep moral and ethical corruption we're seeing so much of in Republican politics would pervade the executive floors of Boeing as well.

The corruption of those purchased Stanford admissions is only a little iceberg tip of corruption there. I don't know what they've been doing since the 1990s; but before that, massive, systematic defrauding of taxpayers, outright theft public money to pay for cushy lifestyles went on for years. It was so embedded that new thefts continued even as audits and investigations were conducted for old ones.

Fun fact: Marc Garneau was Canada's first astronaut and has been to the International Space Station 3 times.
