We've learned 19-year-old Olivia was on Rick Caruso's yacht in the Bahamas. Caruso's daughter, Gianna, Olivia and several other friends were spending spring break in the area.
Gianna and Olivia have been friends for quite some time, occasionally posting photos of them together on social media.
Caruso, a billionaire who has major real estate holdings including The Grove in L.A., tells TMZ, "My daughter and a group of students left for spring break prior to the government's announcement yesterday. Once we became aware of the investigation, the young woman decided it would be in her best interests to return home." Olivia is off the yacht.

Expel her ass and let Daddy Warbucks take care of her.

(38,958 posts)I don't know what year she is in, but all her grades and credits since admission should be voided. She got in under false pretenses and if she wants to go to school, she can do it the old fashion way like the rest of the masses.

(4,492 posts)from what I hear, she only is interested in school for the partying and gameday "college experience."
She's a YouTube star and social media influencer. I think she prefers that to studying.

(38,958 posts)I believe make it easier for her. Void out her acceptance and any credits earned then just go away. Her Mom can deal with both the Little Darling and her own self inflicted legal troubles.

(23,002 posts)set any kind of standard for how others should live. It's kind of outrageous. No Mas Khardasian Types. Actually use school to better your life academically and make your country a better place. She doesn't need to be in school to enjoy the tail gating and internet advice. School is..gulp...for learning. Other kids would give a pinky toe to be at her school.

(14,618 posts)For an undergraduate to be on the private yacht of a university official?
This guy should be forced off the board. It is simply not acceptable.

We should call things what they are and not insinuate.

(33,992 posts)One of whom happens to be the daughter of the university official who owns the yacht.
I'm a university official - and my daughter's friends (some of whom attend the university) attend private parties at our home. No yacht, but the principle is the same.

(31,261 posts)The parent of one of the young women own the yatch, which had left port days before the indictment. The yatch is almost surely fully staffed by a captain and a crew. Seems like typical rich kid stuff, take rich daddy or mommy' expensive toys for a fun run, as long as the kid doesn't have to drive or handle it.

(5,768 posts)... to "distance himself"?
As far as being involved goes, so far the culprits seem to be lower level grifters... coaches, consultants, test proctors. It doesn't seem likely that anyone in a high level position would be involved.
MontanaMama
(23,295 posts)Theres no way he didnt know wth was going down when he took the kids out on the boat. Maybe he wasnt involved maybe he was. The optics are horrible and well find out eventually how high this goes. Quite frankly I dont see how it is unlikely that anyone in a high level position wouldnt be involved. Grifters and cheats occur at every economic level...take a look at Congress and the current WH cabinet and administration for Petes sake.

(61,690 posts)was that her BFF was there, and the BFF is the daughter of the chairman of the board of trustees? What a wretched, tainted, toxic system. So much for republicans being all about merit-based advancement.

(13,479 posts)I don't know what any of these people have to do with Republicans. Most probably identify as Liberal. But they aren't politicians.
We should be making sure that politicians don't kowtow to any of these people who would abuse the system in such a scum baggy way.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)She could have been unaware of what was going on. The parents are rather silly, if they wanted their daughter in, just talk to the influential parent of her best friend, but that may have gotten back to the daughter, so they took an illegal route. It is pretty common practice for the kids of influential people to get into school all over the world, when merit alone would not have gotten them in, there is nothing new about that reality.

(31,261 posts)Almost anything else is on the table. I am not defending the parents, but people are making all types of assumptions about them because they did something that was stupid.
Dorian Gray
(13,479 posts)But I also say diminishing what they did as "stupid" isn't right, either. This was a very calculated scheme that would ensure that their children would jump ahead of other children. It was calculated and complicated. They didn't just fall into this.

(13,479 posts)And everybody else involved in this?
I mean, these are selfish parents who want their kids to rise up above everybody else. You also have Bill McGlashin, a partner in the Rise Fund, which focuses on socially responsible investing. (And it's also supposed to support equitable educational opportunities.)
What he's saying publicly is very different than what he did privately.

(31,261 posts)in the old fashioned way, use his powerful influence with the school to say "admit this kid". Give admissions officer a name and phone number and presto, she would have been in. Believe it or not, that has happened since the advent of higher education.
BigmanPigman
(51,565 posts)but now it is so "in your face" and blatant. There is no shame with some people.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)That type of activity has happened since the advent of elite education, or elite anything that is selective, a kid is best friend with the kid of a powerful person, the powerful person uses his or her influence to get the kids into sought after positions. When I first started my career as an engineer my department manager was the true definition of a moron, the man was majorly dense, but his dad was a high level Vice President of the corporation. I have seen that since and actually saw it earlier in high school and college, I don't let it bother me, I focus on my life objectives.

(31,261 posts)Schools like USC, Harvard, Duke, Stanford exist because of rich muckamucks that set them up, help finance them and sit on their various boards. They let in other kids that don't have powerful connections to avoid looking like some elite snobville. Has happened since such schools came into existence. BTW, ALL of the schools that were involved in the investigation are private universities, set up by and maintained by rich people for educating mostly rich kids. It is what it is, when the story broke, I thought about all the good state run public universities that were not involved.
On edit, one school that was involved UCLA, is a state run public university, the only one on the list. But I am sure such shenanigans happen at other high level state U's.
