Turning Class Conflict into Generational Conflict: Huffington Post Edition

There continues to be a large market for pieces saying the big conflict in the US is generational rather than class. The Huffington Post made its latest contribution today.

The piece is more than a bit confused, but its headline explicitly gives the intention "America's Defining Divide Is Not Left vs. Right. It's Old vs. Young." Beyond this basic point, as in worry about age, not class, it is difficult to figure out what the article is talking about...

I am a boomer will be 64 soon. I am active politically, have been for over 40 years. I really love some of the young members of our party. I may be a bit more hesitant than I used to be because talk of gutting social security and medicare hits really close to home right now.

I want a leader who can guide us out of this dark time, reestablish our government and mend our country. It will take young and old to heal us. As long as we fight each other we lose.

Got your age by 15 and love to get involved with State and Local Elections. What really pushes my interest is,the Young Folks whom decided to make a difference.

This past 2018 campaign season was a hoot, when I went to the Campaign Office to volunteer, always College Students or even High Schooler's working the phones or doing text messaging.

And yes,my Generation is the one responsible for the POS in the White House. And I look at the Young Folks bringing their message of change to the process.

What bothers me here is the characterization that older folks feel “ it’s only important to me if it affects me.”

I am too old to have children but I still feel strongly that a woman has the right to choose to terminate a pregnancy if she wants to without ridiculous restrictions.

I own my home but I realize it’s a lot harder for young people nowadays to afford one than it was for me, and I support economic opportunity for all.

I don’t have to work and care for children right now, obviously, but I see how impossible it is for young parents and I support childcare subsidies (or a government stipend for stay-at-home parent)

I believe in equal opportunity for all races and genders. Period.

I don’t have any gay family members, but I believe they deserve equal treatment under the law just like everyone else.

I don’t have kids in school any more, but I believe in supporting quality public education for all.

I guess I don’t fit the profile of the selfish, short-sighted, racist that this article paints of many Boomers.

I agree with this article. I've canvassed in many neighborhoods and I've seen it in the conversations I've had with people.

School funding, guns, climate change, economic issues. These are all issues that impact the next generation. I've never once talked to a young person who complains about paying for Grandma's medicare, but I have talked to older people who complain about paying school taxes.
