the future of the planet!
There's a worldwide student protest against humanity's oil dependency (which causes global warming).
Here's what I posted earlier (sorry I didn't mention Trump, the entertainer-in-chief?)

(41,956 posts)I was in high school and still recall the program and all of us singing Hello, carbon monoxide/Hello sulfur dioxide/The air, the air is everywhere/Breathe deep/While you sleep, breathe deep.
We helped things for a while. I hope we will again.

(25,586 posts)about being uninterested or behind the times so much as being a bit cynical and jaded about the shouting of class-skipping schoolchildren accomplishing much. Theyll be really into this for a little while and then move on to whatever other activity about which their social media feed tells them to be excited.
All of us can take concrete steps in our lives that will accomplish more than any amount of yammering in the street. Stop eating meat and dairy. Use air travel only as absolutely needed. Limit your automobile use. Use heating and cooling with less abandon. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

(16,926 posts)It stuck, my whole life so far. And my kids embraced environmentalism, I hope because of the example we set, and hopefully the information they got from other sources. So far, their whole lives. I can't check everything off your list, but Leaving a small impact on the planet is my goal.
It doesn't matter how we get involved, or even if we get involved, then step away. You don't know who you'll influence. I am grateful for all of the kids who care enough to go out and march, or make a statement however they can. It isn't going to be a fad for a lot of them.

(36,009 posts)Notice that I and many others post on climate change in other subforums -- Latest Breaking, V & M, General Discussion, Democratic Primaries, DU's Lounge -- and comment anywhere that's appropriate for raising the issue.

(2,596 posts)And I also think there are too many people here to can't face up to distressing problems. Not criticizing, it is hard, but it is necessary.
This is based on my experiences posting about the vaquita. If I was posting pictures of dinner or puppies I'd get 10 times as many views, replies and recs.
I believe we need to ask the moderators for a climate change/endangered species forum in the Environment and Energy folder.
It would make it easy for those of us who are concerned to communicate action items like this. It would be even better if that category was pinned to the front page!!
Codeine
(25,586 posts)I think its just despair that limits the conversation. The vaquita is just plain doomed.
Sea Shepherd and the law enforcement apparatus of Mexico cant stop the destruction of that species at this point. The only possible hope is to just round them all up and try to save them in a captive environment, but thats hard with a cetacean; nobody wants to cage them up.
rwsanders
(2,596 posts)If the Mexican government would allow other nations to contribute to patrols and net removal they could recover.
Recent research has shown small isolated species are genetically similar and have already eliminated bad genes (covered in Brooke Bessesen's book).
Captivity was tried, but porpoises don't take well to it. They panic and die or the few that are kept don't breed successfully. So it is not an option.
I'm still hopeful that the movie "Sea of Shadows" will turn the tide and some real enforcement efforts will take place.
But as you said despair and what I've heard described as disaster fatigue are really limiting efforts. My family watched "Big Miracle" and there was more attention and effort to save 3 gray whales than has been expended to save a species.

(9,319 posts)Simply pool their money to buy land and plant trees on it? That would help right? Ive never heard of this happening. Yes, I know you need to work on the problem from both ends, but you need to convince Republicans its even a problem to do anything substantial on the other end.

(809 posts)Last July, I was at my friends mothers house and we were discussing a thirty year window and now it has been changed to 11 years. Most of the timelines have been too conservative. This requires a vast effort before SHTF.

(14,676 posts)Yes, climate change is a cancer that will kill us all in a few years.
But trump and the gop scumbags are an arterial bleed and we need to keep pressure on the wound. Yes, we need chemo, but we have to live long enough to make the appointments.

(205,064 posts)And just last night I read and recommended an OP on the International school walkout so I was aware of it. As for the thread linked above, I think it was the subject line. Who or what is Channing Tatum and how does that relate to the climate change crisis?

(28,117 posts)Got it. So, THAT'S why I did a search for Tatum.
Anyway, I agree that he has a hot bod...and his movie "The Eagle" wasn't bad at all.

(1,736 posts)I agree that the issue isn't prominent enough on DU, since if landmark climate legislation is going to happen, it has to start with people like us. We need a big win in 2020 and to put legislation on the new president's desk in the first 100 days.
Thanks for shedding more light on the collective reticence to raise the profile of this issue.

(2,848 posts)people say they care but when you talk about what has to change then its crickets. No one wants to hear we need gas prices at $10 or we need to completely stop eating meat.
DemocracyMouse
(2,275 posts)addressing global warming to better paying jobs in the solar industry and an overhaul of our lopsided economy which gives tax breaks to oil companies and favors the 1%.
What we need in effect is a Green New Deal which links environmental salvation (it's no longer merely protection!) with traditional FDR era economic policies.... yes, they're so traditional the hyper-messed up Republicans don't recognize them (having become radical and, well, messed up!)
Kaleva
(36,291 posts)While none of us, as individuals, can reverse climate change, each of us can prepare to adapt to it.

(2,275 posts)It's like this:
1) Burn oil and coal.
2) Put soot in air.
3) Burn more fossil fuels.
4) Blanket planet in a thick layer of gases which traps heat, warms oceans, stirs up hurricanes...
5) OIL COMPANIES AND THE 1% BUY THEIR WAY INTO SHRINKING PLANETARY SAFE ZONES.
Then the pendulum swings back to sanity:
6) CITIZENS WAKE UP, STOP WATCHING FOOTBALL AND CLOWN PRESIDENTS, AND NOTICE THAT SCIENTISTS EXIST.
7) Citizens pressure ALL candidates to make "addressing global warming" a high priority.
8) Better yet, citizens pressure ALL candidates to link investment in clean, cheap solar energy with a return to traditional tax rates (hence not radical) and traditional levels of investment in civic infrastructure like education, public transportation and even civic architecture.
9) Greenhouse gases subside. Worst outcomes avoided.
We may not return to a pastoral 18th century, but the worst outcomes are avoided and our grandchildren will thank us. (Assuming we listen to the scientists, not the clowns).
Reducing greenhouse gases is sensible, scientific and doable. Empathetic stewardship of the Earth is even a tradition in all the world's religions.
Let's stop wasting time on the Great Clown and get this traditional priority back in the saddle. Polluting the Earth is radical. Healing the Earth is a sound, sacred and sensible tradition. Don't let Russian trolls and clown presidents tell you otherwise.
