... just like the cigarette companies. Hey, RW gun owners, this could be a good thing. Maybe our National Economy would not suffer the losses .... not to mention the cost of Law enforcement, health insurance or the lack of such.

(11,537 posts)It is the epitome of corruption for gun manufacturers to be the only industry that receives blanket immunity from any product liability. (Thank You George Bush.) Its time for their immunity to be rescinded

(638 posts)One of the issues with an insurance scheme that people typically bring up is that you cannot insure a intentional act, as it is typically uninsurable as a matter of public policy. Typically there are insurance statutes forbidding such insurance because insuring intentional acts creates a moral hazard, i.e, by insuring such an action, you are actually incentivizing the illegal act.
To avoid the moral hazard, you could, as you suggest, set up a victim compensation plan, similar to the vaccine compensation courts, which would provide restitution to victims of intentional shootings. It could be funded by a small tax on ammunition or something similar. It would have to have exceptions for victims that were engaged in illegal conduct at the time of their shooting to avoid public outrage of a criminal victim receiving a payout but I think it would avoid the issues that an insurance scheme has built into it.

If our society is going to insist on saturating itself with unregulated firearms, then this is the least we can do for innocent bystanders who get caught up in the insanity through no fault of their own.
