Fox Business host and Wall Street Journal editor-at-large Gerard Baker said Monday theres no question white supremacists see President Donald Trump as on their side, during a segment on the mass shootings in New Zealand.
Baker joined Fox News Dana Perino on Monday to discuss the killing of more than 50 people at two Christchurch mosques by a white nationalist. He argued that whether its Islamist terrorism or right wing terrorism, both sides need to blame the ideology behind such attacks instead of social media.
Perino noted that critics of the president have tied him to the shooting, mostly on the grounds that the president was cited as a a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose in the suspected perpetrators manifesto. Baker argued that theres no direct linkage between the shooter and Trump even when he ran on banning Muslims from the U.S. and Perino asked him again whether Trump can be blamed for a trend of white supremacist violence.
There is no question that white supremacists, large numbers of white supremacists, see Donald Trump and other people like him as kind of on their side, Baker said, noting the presidents rhetoric on immigration and cultural issues.
Baker went on to argue that Trump was badly misrepresented with Charlottesville remarks, but said he could be more explicit in his condemnations.
