Jerome, a senior on the basketball team, has refused to get vaccinated on religious grounds, despite a chickenpox outbreak at his Catholic school.
"It's derived from aborted fetal cells. And as a Catholic, we do not believe in abortion. We believe it is morally wrong and it would go against my conscience," he said.
The chickenpox vaccine relies on cell lines from two fetuses aborted in the 1960s. No further abortions were involved in continuing those lines and the Vatican has given the vaccine its blessing.

He's either suffering, as most of us did, from thinking we know everything as we approach graduation* or he belongs to a very conservative parish that finds Francis to be "too liberal".
*As an aside. My grandmother graduated from high school in 1917 and she liked to quote her principal whose first words at the graduation ceremony were "You will never be smarter than you are today."

(47,425 posts)Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin said he deliberately exposed his kids to chickenpox, instead of vaccinating them against the common childhood illness. Speaking to local radio station WKCT on Tuesday, Bevin said all nine of his children had chickenpox.
So called chickenpox parties have been popping up across the U.S. for years. Parents sometimes deliberately expose their children to other kids with chickenpox, hoping they catch the virus and therefore become immune. The thinking is that most kids recover quickly, and the illness can be far more serious if they catch it in adulthood. But experts say a better, safer way to become immune to chickenpox is to get vaccinated.

Someone has to tell him about shingles. Now, there is pain. So painful that seniors have known to commit suicide.
