(10,870 posts)Those pesky rabbits can hide anywhere.
It's amazing to me, after all the pain this church has inflicted through the centuries, that they still exist.
A testament to the power of brainwashing.

(29,067 posts)have found the percentage of pedophile priests to be about 6%, and that this number mirrors that of men in other professions, right?

(52,199 posts)i certainly would never knowingly have anything to do with any group with an incidence of pedophilia that high, and i certainly wouldn't want my child to have anything to do with it either!

(52,199 posts)one of the key differences is that the priesthood has a professional component to the crimes.
that is, incidence of pedophilia among lawyers might also be 6%, but this is probably not lawyers abusing their child clients or other children they encounter in the course of doing business as a lawyer. instead, they are abusing their own children. in that context, they merely happen to be lawyers; it's not relevant to the pedophilia.
in the case of priests, they're accused of abusing children who are not their own, children who they encounter as a result of their profession.
of course, pedophilia is certainly wrong in either case, but it would seem that the problem in the priesthood could be managed better, say with security cameras, proactive education, better enforcement, etc.

Pedophile doctors like Larry Nasser of the USA Olympic gymnastics team, clearly commit their crimes within the scope of their professions.

(29,067 posts)It's appalling, of course, but that statement, without the dates, suggests these are RECENT crimes, when about 80% of them are not.
