When these invasions were all shiny and new, everyone loved them some power projection. Oh boy, the mighty United States was going to set things right in the world, just you wait and see. If you weren't in favor of military intervention, you might as well sign up with the terrorists, you terrorist. Buzzkills who kept asking what the goal of the occupation was were shouted down and removed from the society of decent people. The administration knows what it's doing, so just shut up and wave your flag.
Then the bodies started coming home in those snappy, flag-draped coffins, and the Bush administration knew it had to act decisively. And they did: No more coverage of repatriated remains coming through Dover. Problem solved. Some people, not very serious ones but some, asked whether it might be a good idea to bring the troops home. Well, those cut-and-runners got a hefty dose of All-American jingoism, and they learned to keep it to themselves. Pulling out would render the sacrifices of those already killed meaningless. So more people had to be killed to justify those who had already been killed.
Shamefully, we kept it up through two changes of administration. There was not going to be any apostasy from our national religion under a Democratic regime any more than a Republican one. The land of the High Church of Redemptive Violence would remain faithful to the creed.
Now, the occupation drags on, and two more service members die this week. It's not exciting anymore. It's not sexy. No gee-whiz explosions making the Afghani rubble bounce. The official response will be a collective shrug.
