...what exactly happens?

Does the UK stay in the EU? Or does the UK still leave but is basically left stranded with no real transition out?

...so every day it comes closer to a departure. In the intervening period, it can TRY to approve a withdrawl agreement (not likely), revoke Article 50 (not likely), or call for a new referendum (can't be done before the April deadline). Alternatively the Government could fall causing more chaos. At this point, a hard Brexit seems more and more likely.
